I feel like I kind of messed up coloring this. I was trying to make
the lighting more direct then I usually do, but I feel like I ended up
just using muddy colors instead. Maybe it just looks that way to me?

But the muddy like saturation goes really well with the red colours for example the red dress/shoes looks really soft. The skin too.

Don't say that. Every colour has its own effect.
I have to admit this picture looks more calm than tensed up because of the less saturated colours.
