Apocrypha

According to the Star Fleet Technical Manual, there was a Constitution-class USS Hornet in service in the 23rd century with the registry NCC-1714 (although the game supplement Federation Ship Recognition Manual gives its as registry NCC-1778). This would seem to be the same Hornet that was mentioned as a combatant in the novel Dreadnought!. According to the DC comic book "Gateway", she was captained by the sister of Edward Hagler.

Speculation

The USS Hornet was one of the last Enterprise Refits built from the Hull up.  In all there were 20 built that would serve Starfleet into the 24th Century as more Excelsior Class vessels came on line.  Launched in 2279, it would serve 46 years as one of Starfleet's capital ships.  Although not considered the last Constitution sub-class built, it employed some of the most modern technological enhancements.  She was considered a test bed for the USS Excelsior systems, although she was overlooked to have Trans-warp capabilities.  She was retired in 2345 and was scrapped as components were used for  continuing Miranda Class vessels.  In 2288, the Hornet was the first vessel to penetrate the Galaxy barrier, and return with no fatalities..

NOTE: I would be pissed off if that last part is NOT the truth.
