Agree with the executive messing thing up. If it wasn't for them, Smaug would have been a real 4 quadrupedal dragon rather than a big bat. His appearance at the end of the first movie proved it that someone high up decided to scrap that and go for "their" vision rather than the author original and true vision of Smaug.

Actually, cumberbatch was the reason they changed it.Β he started full body mocap acting by crawling around on the floor on his hands and knees, doing this evil slinky motion.Β they figured it'd work better with a two legged 'wyvern' body type and boom, they changed smaug.

In other words, they change the original material to accommodate an actor?
Not a valid excuse to me. People wondered why the new Ghostbusters or Fantastic Four movies bombed: bad casting and plot change to accommodate specific actors.
If he wanted to do belly crawling, he should have applied for the role of Goth in alive motion version of Silverwing, not for Smaug.
