Just find a picture of the astronauts on the moon and use those lunarscapes for your background.

That's cheating But at least if I had a look at the real photo before drawing, I never drew blurred shadows on the celestial body with no atmosphere

Oh, it's not cheating.

BUT....
Doing shadows on a lunarscape is actually easier. It's typically darker as there aren't any other light sources to break up or alter the shadows. You'll have your primary light source (a)the sun, secondary (b)full planet, anyone? and (c)light source from an Alicorn trying to see in the dark.

Hmm...you got me thinking on doing a shadows exercise with those tips in mind. Thanks for jogging it out of me!
