Description *EDIT - This is an OLD POST and I have learned easier ways to do things (like where I say to set the line art to Multiply - That's No-no for professional colorists - I've since learned how to do lines on their own layer without a white background so no "multiply" is needed). Please note - These plug-ins work best with strickly black and white line art that have clean connected lines and no inked shadows. If there are inked shadows go in and erase the shadows first and if some of the lines aren't connected, go in and use the pencil tool to connected them before running the program so that the flats are nice and clean. One of these days I'll get around to updating this FLATS tutorial to include that new information.*

*EDIT #2 - As with anything, we learn faster and better ways of doing things with time. I no longer flat this way. Here's a tutorial that is WAY better and is how I flat now: www.livestream.com/delanty/vid… )

Now back to the Original Post:

This isn't the perfect way to lay flats (there is no perfect way, different techniques have different pros and cons), as any gaps in the lines will fill with the same color with this BPelt technique. But it does cut down on a LOT of time and work.

To keep the same color from filling two different areas where gaps in the line art is present just go in with the "pencil" tool (with a small tip set to black color) and connect any open lines before starting the BPelt plug-in.

Thanks so much to fco for sending me the link to this awesome time-saving program and to NormanWong for helping me figure out how to use it.

To download the BPelt plug-in go to BPelt.com www.bpelt.com/

Lines used in this tutorial are from windriderx23.deviantart.com/ar… . Check out his awesome line art! *Always ask the line artists first before coloring their lines.*

**Please forgive any spelling or grammar mistakes.**

Oh - And if you like the program I encourage you to donate to the bpelt website as they offer this program 100% free of charge. This program/plug-in has literally saved me hundreds of hours (and will for you too if you color as much as I do lol) - a program like that is priceless, but they offer it for FREE! So show your support and donate at least a little to let them know you really appreciate it!

This is awesome! I'm going to try this method. I feel just like you said when I am done with the flat layers. I don't even want to do the fun stuff, lol. Thanks a lot for the info!

Now that the flats are done...do you add it to channels?....add layers above the flats?.....or something entirely different?

I want to be able to use the lasso like this: [link]

How do you do this when all the flats are on one layer?

Thank you for your time.

TracyWong In reply to ColoristChris [2010-12-30 22:26:25 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure I understand your question. The flats are on one layer, the lines (set to multiply) are on the layer above the flats. To select an area you want to render just use the Wand Tool on the flats layer and select the color/area that you want to work with and then work that area.

I downloaded this plugin the other day. OMG I have never been so happy. I had a monster load of details to color on my webcomic, and I swear it probably cut off several hour of tedious work.

I was looking for a tutorial just like this when I first installed it. I wish I had known you posted one. It would have made figuring it out a good deal quicker.

I hope lots more people see this! They'll be so happy if they do.

I have a bit of a problem. Whenever I try to download the zip files for my Windows computer, I'll go to open them, but it always says that the file is impossible to locate, and that it does not exist.
When I simply open the file instead of saving it, and try to paste it into the plug ins file, and then to the filters folder, it never shows up in the filter drop down menu.
Also, I finally managed to copy and paste from the zip instead of extracting the files, but it did exactly the same thing.
In fact, when I try to copy and paste to the Plug ins folder in general, NOTHING appears, not even the zip. Is there any way you can help me?

I've not heard of anyone else having an issue with the bpelt plug-in. I've had it work just fine on three different computers. I am not really a tech type person so I really don't know what advice I could give you to fix the problem. If you have any questions on installing it I'm sure someone at the Bpelt website can help you.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.

It's helped a lot, but sometimes, when I bitmap something, it makes the lines all spaced out and the colors are all the same because of it. Do you have a remedy?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TracyWong In reply to humblerthanyou [2009-06-05 21:01:03 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm Try saving the image at a higher DPI first. I like to use 200 dpi. That way when you save it to bitmap it saves the dots closer together. And if there are any gaps in the lines of the original drawing it always helps to go in first and connect those lines too.

I hope that helps.

Great! Thanks so much for helping me pimp it. This plug-in (in my opinion) is one of the best kept secrets in the industry and I'm jazzed to let it out so that more people can enjoy it. I hope that it will encourage people to donate to the BPelt website, as they offer the program for free and it's really such a great time saver!

I want to get back into drawing so bad. I use to do it a lot. I am tiring to get familiar with different programs like Illustrator but nothing beats pencils and paper. I just cant draw digitally.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TracyWong In reply to nitchwarmer [2009-05-30 23:43:22 +0000 UTC]

Most line artists draw the old fashion way with pencil on paper (and then often go over the lines in pen) and then scan the drawing so they can do clean up work and add colors digitally in photoshop.

OMG... You mean someone had something like this available and it hasn't spread like wildfire on this site? AND it works with CMYK images too? Man... That just made my life easier...

TracyWong In reply to necroscension [2009-05-30 22:57:06 +0000 UTC]

hahah! I know right? It took me a couple months of working with it to figure out the best way to use it (like switching to bitmap before using the plug-in and figuring out the settings). After that this program has been a dream! It's really saved SO MANY HOURS of work for me so far.

Anyway, I'm glad you like it. If you use it let me know how it goes.

Rocket-Regios [2009-05-30 10:51:29 +0000 UTC]

ok is confirmed, yes to get the best results we need to be sure that we got the drawing clean, no incomplete lines, and in Bitmap format! this method just saves us tons of time!!!

once again Thank you so much Stacy Raven!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TracyWong In reply to Rocket-Regios [2009-05-30 11:00:05 +0000 UTC]

Actually it doesn't need to be bitmap format as I show how to change it to that in the tutorial AFTER the original image gets saved to the clipboard. When you make an image a bitmap it makes it kind of "craggly" and you loose the smoothness of the lines. So I definitely suggest saving the original image to the clipboard and then following the tutorial steps to make it a bitmap image.

You're welcome. I'm glad you have found it useful.

Rocket-Regios [2009-05-30 10:39:50 +0000 UTC]

It is not difficult at all

I'm havng issues but because I draw with normal pencil xD I'm gonna need to use my pen tablet to make all lines perfect and full black XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

Rocket-Regios [2009-05-30 10:37:34 +0000 UTC]

something very important to achieve this process, the drawing needs to have no incomplete lines and like you said Bitmap format is mandatory full in black to give maximum quality

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TracyWong In reply to Rocket-Regios [2009-05-30 10:48:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I put in the artists comment area "To keep the same color from filling two different areas where gaps in the line art is present just go in with the "pencil" tool (with a small tip set to black color) and connect any open lines before starting the BPelt plug-in."

That helps a lot. Also if you are using a pencil drawing it helps to up the contrast and make your lines as black as possible before starting the plug-in.

Rocket-Regios [2009-05-30 10:32:51 +0000 UTC]

ok Here is the final result in my case! it works prett y fine and a long way easier!!

The plug ins in my case I had to unzip to desk then from there copy and paste to plug ins in the filter carpet, from there load photoshop, and finally save the original image to bitmap, and finally make magic with the filters!!

THIS TUTORIALL RULESS!! THANK YOU SO MUCH STACY RAVEN!!
