Much thanks - that's very kind of you! Especially to compare me to such an accomplished artist. I haven't heard of him before (so thank you for the link), but I think I can say that I like his art just based on that one picture.

Hmmmm, I agree. After I wrote my last comment, I tried to think of more good artists that did a lot of drugs and couldn't. So, that's that.
On a more personal note, if you don't mind my asking: are you doing art professionally or more of a hobby?

thanks! I think I'm too entrenched in the digital realm to go back to sketchbooks and pens but occasionally I do. Although now with the ipad, computer sketching is that much easier.
