"The human race was always your favourite, Doctor. But now, there is no human race. There is only... the Master race!"

Ever since the days of the Academy on Gallifrey, the Doctor has had an arch enemy among the other Time Lords, a Moriarty to his Sherlock Holmes. The Master.

After staring into the Untempered Schism (a hole in the fabric of reality) at the age of 8, the Master became twisted and evil, and sought to conquer time and space. A skilled hypnotist and a master of disguise, he has been the bane of the Doctor's existence for centuries.

After being killed by his own wife at the end of "Last of the Time Lords", a cult of the Master's loyal servants (known as the Cult of Saxon) decided to try and resurrect their leader. They succeeded, but the result was flawed. The reborn Master was constantly hungry for human flesh, and possessed strange abilities as a side effect of bleeding his own life energy. After accomplishing a - quite frankly bonkers - plan to turn every single human being on the planet into himself, he was able to temporarily bring Gallifrey out of the Time War and into orbit around Earth.

John Simm reprised his role for this "incarnation" of the Master. He appeared in the 2009 two-part Christmas and New Year special, "The End of Time". However, upon realizing that the Time Lord President Rassilon had been exploiting him for his entire life, he had a last minute change of heart, and plunged himself into the Time War, sealing away the Time Lords and effectively saving the Doctor and planet Earth.

The End of Time Master has a bizarre array of what can only be described as "super-powers", based around shooting torrents of blue electrical energy out of his hands. He can even use this ability to fly.
...yeah, this two-parter was weird.
