The smg in Half Life is not an MP5. It's an MP7. Or at least it is in HL2. Not sure about the original.

In the original Half-Life, like he mentioned, it is indeed an MP5. The SMG featured in Half-Life 2, although heavily inspired, is not an MP7.

Actually, it's supposed to be modeled off of the MP7 prototype. Originally, it was going to look like a production MP7, but they decided to use the prototype in retail HL2 because (in addition to the obscurity the MP7 had to begin with in American culture at the time), they felt that aliens would fall victim to believing the "prototype is always better than retail" thing & start mass-producing MP7 prototypes with some improvements. Namely: a self-cocker, a magazine cap increase to 44+chambered round (as opposed to the max 40+chambered round universal among the MP7 series), a touch-sensor activated warp reload (hence why Gordon just slaps the magazine to reload it), & the grenade launcher. As to how the launcher stores ammo, maybe they made an extradimensionally-stored AR2-style belt-o-clips. The lack of a clip counter in the grenade launcher's ammo tracker is due to syncing errors caused by resulting dimensional desynchronization.
