Description I was reading henryjenkins.org (because he is made of awesome) . One bit jumped out at me and grabbed me by the throat.

When I try to explain slash to non-fans , I often reference that moment in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan where Spock is dying and Kirk stands there, a wall of glass separating the two longtime buddies. Both of them are reaching out towards each other, their hands pressed hard against the glass, trying to establish physical contact. They both have so much they want to say and so little time to say it. Spock calls Kirk his friend, the fullest expression of their feelings anywhere in the series. Almost everyone who watches that scene feels the passion the two men share, the hunger for something more than what they are allowed. And, I tell my nonfan listeners, slash is what happens when you take away the glass.

Yes. This.

This is what I feel like but can never put into words, this is what I'm really trying to say when I have one of my big rants about fandom or slash or the fangirling experience.

This right there.

I only recently got into Trek fandom. I'd seen TNG before but never started on TOS, out of some misguided notion that surely I wasn't that much of a geek. I mean, sure, I'd translated poetry into Quenya and I've been to conventions and I may or may not have made a sculpey bust of Captain Picard, but that doesn't mean I'm the sort of geek who'd like TOS.

God, I fell for this fandom like a brick. Yeah, there's the lol-worthy side of the cheesy effects or the horrible gorn-costumes or the constant ripping of Kirk's shirt (not objecting, though. Rawr young!Shatner), but then you get Kirk's indulgent smile whenever Bones and Spock are bickering again, or Scotty's constant exaggerating of time-estimates, or just the plain and palpable love and respect between everyone on that bridge and it makes my fannish heart squeal with delight.

For many people K/S is what Sam/Frodo was (and is) to me, and I can see why this is the pairing that kickstarted slashdom. I can see why this is the pairing that is still going strong even after four decades.

What I cannot see is why I didn't see it before.

Excellent drawing!!! And I love the simple way that's put on words.
I usually don't even bother bringing the subject, since I don't know anyone who would agree with it, but oh well. It's definitely canon, and I think it's really beautiful

Excellent art. Excellent quote. Excellent summation of the TOS experience.

I grew up on TNG. Mind you, it was in reruns by the time I was old enough to properly understand it. But those reruns were like the crux of my and my older brothers' TV lives. We were pretty much content to leave the boob-tube off until TNG was on, heh.

I NEVER expected to like TOS. I didn't even consider watching it until I saw the reboot when it hit theatres. Now...now, I don't even know if I can fathom Star Trek, without TOS -- eve though I hadn't bothered to watch even one episode in its entirety until this May.

's for your lovely art!

I never did growup on ST. My dad was a SW and Whedon fan, somehow ST never made it into the household until I moved out and my girlfriend all but forced me to sit down and start watching.

But I'm not generally a big Scifi fan to start with. I'm a history geek, I look to the past, not the future. It just never occurred to me that it would be something I would find enjoyable. I made the assumption that it just wasn't my cup of tea.

Haha, Lord, was I wrong. I only started watching the series after the new movie came out, just to fill some holes in my culture, but I fell for it like nothing else. My friends and coworkers are starting to despair of me because I hardly go anywhere anymore without a ST book to hand. I just feel like I have so much catching up to do.

Thank you! I think it was this moment that made me decide to stay in this fandom. (And I hadn't even been warned Spock would die, so it hit doubly hard.)

I'm jealous of y'all that didn't know he was going to die/about STIII....I never had the benefit of it taking me by surprise and really experiencing the emotion of it for real. D:

I'd heard vague rumours, but I wasn't in Trek fandom so I never heard specifics and in any case it's SPOCK, right? So I thought maybe he'd almost die or something.

I fully expected him to somehow be alive again at the end of the movie. When Kirk gave his eulogy and the coffin was shot into space, I just bawled. I couldn't believe it.

(Of course then I posted about it on LJ and everyone basically forced me to sit down and watch III just to cheer me up again.)

I totally get it .I used to be at least tolerant of yaoi...until it leaked into Star Trek. By the way, lovely picture. This part is so moving.

Thank you. I've been a slasher for God, years and years, but it's been a while since I had a pairing jump up at me like that. (Since Aubrey/Maturin, come to think of it.)

I think it's disturbing because of the fact that Kirk, Spock, and all the other Trek characters are live-action rather than animated (with the exception of the animated series from 1972) so they seem more real. Pairing up animated characters seems more fictuous, because they aren't even...physical. I don't know how to describe it.

Never really bothered me, tbh. Love is love is love is love, kind of thing, and it's just so easy to give them a nudge...

That's exactly it. I'm so glad to have found it, because now I can just point at it and go 'READ THIS AND ALL WILL BECOME CLEAR.'

That's one of the most touching moments you could imagine. I sobbed.

And thank you! ^__^
