At last!Β An action portrait of Ultra-Boy, who was not only my favorite Legionnaire, but my favorite super-hero period, growing up!
I always thought his "Thunderbird" emblem was supposed to represent the space-dragon that swallowed him and gave him his powers . . . though in recent years they've drawn it more as a space-whaleΒ . . . and even before that, I don't think it had wings . . . it just sort of swam through space . . .
Anyway, glad to see this epic shot of Jo Nah!

I thought it was a bird as well.

My favorite Legionnaire! Thank you for keeping the original (and only real legion group) memories alive with all of these great renderings.

I always enjoyed Ultra Boy's colors and that pseudo-Thunderbird emblem of his.

I never understood what that symbol was.

According to the LSH Who's Who, Jo based his entire costume's design off the outfit of his trainer, an older man whom Brande hired to train new Legionnaires in the uses of their powers. The symbol itself is Jo's own creation.

Ultra-Boy's trainer/mentor, at least in his first appearance ("The Boy with Ultra Powers," SUPERBOY #98) was called Marla, and his "bird" emblem is slightly different from Jo's.
This page from the comic shows both costumes.Β It also gives us the secret ID Ultra-Boy should use if he ever ends up in the 21st Century:Β Gary Crane:
