Description I was thinking of putting up just the linework for this piece as I was rather pleased with it, but then thought I'd throw it together with a couple of other scans I'd made as I worked on it.

As you can see the initial pencil sketch just blocks the areas out and makes sure that things are roughly in the right place and proportional to one another. Sometimes I might do less than this before really getting underway, it depends on how I'm feeling really. In this case though I added some additional pencil details, particularly the windows on the buildings, again pretty roughly, to make sure the perspective was correct. I don't like to take a ruler to check the lines, and most of the time I don't work to a specific focal point, just an idea of one. It feels too much like technical drawing otherwise, though it does mean I sometimes throw in a really wrong line. Once the additional sketch details are done I go straight into doing the pen work. Hopefully with all the key elements in place I don't make a mistake I can't erase or hide. Finally, with a completed ink line drawing I do the inks, starting normally with the solid blacks and working from dark to light.

I just googled it to find out, looks interesting. I don't do drawing on the computer really, I have a tablet which means I could do the tracing thing (computer aided or otherwise) easily enough, but I'd feel I'd cheated in some way. I get worried if the process becomes either too computer-aided or overly 'technical'. I never grid out a picture to draw, and as mentioned don't sometimes do the basic things that I should, like making sure my perspective lines are right. At the same time, I'd really like to produce really nice, crisp, vector styled art. Tricky!

i think live trace is made for things like this, there is even a preset that would work perfect for you. all my vectors start out pen drawings on paper scanned livetraced and coloured all with illustrator. its gtreat so easy and lots of options for colour combos, textures ,patterns etc. the options are endless.

Thanks. I do actually have Illustrator so should give it a try. I'll let you know how I get on.

I actually don't like live trace on illustrator, I prefer doing my own tracing. tedious and involved a lot of breaks from the computer, but gives it a personal non-mechanical touch. supposedly veterans of illustrator can tell the diff. btwn live trace use and just using the pen tool.

but anyways...

I like seeing the process.

Thanks. I did the whole thing in a day, working on and off. The inking wasn't especially complicated which helped.

I'm truly impressed, it usually takes me at least two or three days to draw that kind of thing-we call it here the graphic, really nice work...
