Description Full title: "Siberian Khatru II; Moongate Climbers".

Oil on canvas. 20"x30".

This is my second piece inspired by "Siberian Khatru" from the 'Close to the Edge' by Yes. I have "Siberian Khatru III" all planned out but due to circumstances beyond my control, I wasn't able to start on it this Winter. Perhaps next October I'll get to it. That painting will have a flock of birds swarming out at the top of the painting because that's what I think of when "Siberian Khatru" rushes towards its climax. Howe's guitar licks sound like birds to me at times.

Some real bright coral like oranges man. Blends in nicely with the expected green's and blue's.

Those images represent the "moongate climbers' from the lyrics in the song.

I've listened to the single and there's allot detail with rivers and a girl mostly beyond the acoustic instrumentals in the background that wheren't climbers.

Thank you. I was reasonably satisfied with how this painting came out but "Siberian Khatru III" I think captures the song even better. The flying birds in it were inspired by Steve Howe's raucous guitar that seems to fly in and out near the end of the song.
I like to listen to music such as "Siberian Khatru" on 'Spotify' while looking at photos of my artwork along with certain landscape photos.

Ok. Yes is a an exciting mystery to me.
They never seem to do typical things musically or lyrically, great to draw to, but I can't find any meaning in their lyrics, not that that's a bad thing but I was just wondering if it was worth investigating.
I've had some cool revelations with Zeppilin and Genisis.

Excited to see Siberian Khatru III!
What's a Khatru?

Jon Anderson's lyrics (especially with early Yes) are rather surreal and stream-of-consciousness. Lyrics like that were common with psychedelic and 'prog' rock groups in the late 60's-early 70's. They are meant to be more evocative than anything.
I think there may be some intentional symbolism in Anderson's lyrics to a degree.

He made up the word "khatru". I like it though. It kind of sounds like a combination of the musical term, 'quadrille' with the poetic term, 'haiku'.

So cool, I love the really narrative prog stuff, but the spacious lyrics are really nice and freeing.
I think you're interpretations actually enhance the song for me.
As wonderful a Roger Dean but nothing like his style.

Do you like old Genesis?
I recently had a good time listening to A Colony of Slippermen.
The lyrics are surreal but it's a pretty cohesive story.
Here's the song if you're interested, lyrics and fill in story telling are below the video.

Yeah, Khatru makes me think of a Lovecraftian creature like Cthulhu.

Thanks. Aside from "Carpet Crawlers" I hadn't listened to anything from the "Lamb.." album in awhile. I like old Genesis. My favorite album is "Selling England by the Pound". The instrumental part at the end of "Dancing With the Moonlit Knight" has a dreamy fantasy landscape garden after the rain kind of sound to me. I sort of had it in mind when I painted "Photosynthesis".

Yeah, old genesis is kind of a new discovery for me.
It has such a nice almost elegant prog feel.
The end of that song was awesome!

What I like about Yes's music (their earlier music mostly) is not just the instrumentation but Jon Anderson's surreal and evocative lyrics. In "Siberian Khatru", phrases like "moongate climber", "warm side the tower" and "river running right on over my head", give me even more visual information to put in the painting.

An absolute treasure for the imagination. The complexity and ever-changing style keeps the creativity flowing in a way that no other group had done (for me). And yes, Jon Anderson stands alone in the vocal field and is my personal favorite singer/front man from the classic/psychedelic rock era. I don't believe we'd have such treasures as Rush and Dream Theater were it not for Yes pioneering that progressive style and sound.
