Well the selkie has had her fun, and now she wants to go home.Only...she can't. The sea will not take her back now.
Excuse the gratuitous drama, but really considering the subject matter and the artist, I'm quite surprised I made it this long without it. I've been listening to the soundtrack for The Assassination of Jesse James all day, which I highly recommend...if you feel like crying your eyes out. It does very well suit this piece, though. This is a wonderful painting. The distraught look on the selkie maid's face is heart-wrenching, while the green in the sea gives it a malevolent appearance, as if it's a living, breathing evil beast of its own. The turmoil of the water matches her expression beautifully.
And with that comment, you're probably wondering if I was high when I wrote it.
I really do love that painting though. Selkies are some of my favorite mythological characters. One of my favorite songs is Heather Dale's "The Maiden and the Selkie" song.
