Description ...of forgetting how to live without you.

---

"It is a foolish man who rages against what he cannot change," he said quietly.

"Muachi, right? The philosopher?"

"Right."

"You remember the day Father died, you told me about the Game? That was Muachi, too. The Game of Man and Woman."

"You said that you didn't know it," Ty replied, recalling it as if it was yesterday. "I said you wouldn't play by the rules if you did."

"That's right, I wouldn't play by the rules," she said. "But I never said I wouldn't play."

---

If you're a fan of Avatar, you liked the general idea of taking precepts from anime to tell a Western-style story, and you're wondering what on earth to do with yourself now that Avatar is *winces* over...

...why on earth aren't you reading Broken Sky by Chris Wooding yet?

They just re-released this old sweetheart of a series from my high school days in an omnibus edition, and I bought and re-read the first two this summer. Shades of Star Wars and Vision of Escaflowne before they both started to suck, if they had a child (and it somehow spiritually fathered Avatar).

A cracking good read, and it doesn't get nearly enough love. Check your libraries, or Amazon. And somebody drop a copy on Mike and Bryan's desks, if they're looking for their next project...

[Those up there are Ty, who is the best and sweetest bald two-toned killer-steampunk-powered-deathtrap-driving pacifist boyfriend ever, and Kia, who is a hundred and twenty pounds of pure awesome and makes Toph Bei Fong look jolly and merciful and Season 3 Katara look gentle and forgiving. Going in scraps soon because it is a scribbly mess, whee!]

Ahh, I've been having my third/fifth obsession with this series recently. I really wanna buy the trilogy released series, I love the cover artwork...but they also were discontinued 0_o'
I have the entire older series, UK editions and USA editions all mixed up.
Poor unloved series..

I know, right? If any book series deserves a fandom...

It's like it was published just a few years too early. Leviathan has a rapidly growing fandom and it's only two books so far.

(I own the first two volumes of the trilogy released series and I'm trawling Amazon for the third to complete the set.)

Well, there wasn't such a culture of YA book promotion back when it was published, you know? Harry Potter kicked that phenomenon off, and it remained one of the only series to get that kind of treatment for years...

Ah so awesome! So glad to finally see someone putting some effort into some fan art for this series. I've loved the books since the day I got the 1st one from our summer reading program at the library years ago. I do wish I could find that one it had a totally different cover than the regular first one.

My thoughts exactly!

When I started watching Avatar, my bitter memory of the cancelled Broken Sky animation series still fresh, I constantly thought "why aren't they doing something like that with BSKY?"
There is so much potential and it would look so good. ;_;

Love the picture. Great pose. :3

*plots along* I am sure they'd like it.

And they'd never expect to get something not Avatar-related via fan-post. XDDD

This sounds quite interesting! Once my school workload chills out a little bit, I'm definitely going to have to check this series out!

It's an /awesome/ series. And I definitely think it would appeal to Avatar fans. Maybe we should do a campaign to move the fandom along? ^^

Satori-Blackthorn In reply to TobuIshi [2008-09-12 21:06:59 +0000 UTC]

Sounds interesting! I think that in the lull of the series being over, and the long wait we have for the live action movie (HOW excited am I about that!!?!) us Avatards are going to need something to fill the gap. Lol.

TobuIshi In reply to Satori-Blackthorn [2008-09-12 22:44:11 +0000 UTC]

*laughs* Honestly, I think Avatar might have more sticking power than most fandoms do after the series ends, simply because we're all so used to filling in gaps. The series ending just feels like the longest-ever Nick hiatus. XD

Satori-Blackthorn In reply to TobuIshi [2008-09-13 00:04:48 +0000 UTC]

Lol! Very good point!! It's like the never ending blank space of lacking of new Avatar. Hey, it's like waiting for season three, 'cept they never announce anything...
But 2010 will come soon enough! (I'm pretty sure that's when the movie's coming...)
And we ARE a pretty dedicated group....

holy shit! holy fucking shit! BROKEN SKY!! OMG!!! *foams at the mouth*

I read this series, waaaay back in elementary school, and fell in love with it so much. I still have the (old and worn) books, and my God I just love them so much. As a child those books inspired me so much and helped craft the person I am today. My love for fantasy, anime, writing; so much was developed from my reading of the series. You can not even begin to understand how happy this sketchy piece of art makes me.

*hugs and jumps up and down* ANOTHER BROKEN SKY FAN! AND IT'S YOU! MY KATARA~~!

...wait, you read it in elementary school? *feels suddenly old*

Please do. If this piece gets even one more person into this awesome (too-small!) fandom, my work here has been worth it. ^^

Wheeee, another Broken Sky fan!
I read all of these when they came out in the seven-book series, and I still re-read them from time to time :3
Have you read any of Wooding's other stuff?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

TobuIshi In reply to kuromiko68 [2008-09-09 14:33:27 +0000 UTC]

As a matter of fact, I have...not! What do you recommend?

(And omigosh yes, there are not enough of us. Why is there no fandom for these books anymore? Or should I just be glad that no fandom means no Osakacest or Ryushi/Whist fanart?)

kuromiko68 In reply to TobuIshi [2008-09-09 21:12:32 +0000 UTC]

I know Poison, Storm Thief, and The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray are all pretty good. Kerosene is also nice, but it's not fantasy like the others.
You should check his site, he's much better at describing them than I am XD
Haha, Osakacest would probably be inevitable if the group got larger (and more likely be Takami/Ryushi than Ryushi/Kia D: ). I can't say I'm one of those fans, all I've made is a little fanart piece for Aurin: [link] . I also made a TVTropes page, you should go add to it if you're into TVTropes: [link]
