how do you actually use these as folder icons? can't seem to get em to work.

The quickest way to install these icons for Mac Users is - 'Right click' on a folder that you wish to change - click 'get info' - Then go to deviantart and click 'download' from one of the icons I've designed - Drag the icon from the download pop-up window to the top left icon in 'get info'.
I'm not too sure with PC sorry.
