I don't think LeFou is naive or lacks common sense, or unintelligent. Even the Wikipedia says so. I think he just idolizes and is infatuated/falling in love with Gaston. In the 2017 movie there's more dept in his character, self awareness. Even though he knows it's wrong he still loves, and longs for the person he wants in spite of how bad he gets treated sometimes.

Gaston doesn't deserve a cute little villager like LeFou to be his sidekick or his friend.
Gaston is the evil one, I would say LeFou is neutral because he's not a criminal like Gaston. That's why I wouldn't have hard feelings against LeFou, because he's naive and he lacks common sense. Sure there are some lessons he needs to learn, like not to follow bad people or melt a live candle. Gaston is the main culprit who needs to be stopped and given a penalty. But I wouldn't really accuse LeFou of any serious crimes, he's naive and doesn't have much intelligence. He's innocent.
