This is very beautiful. Interesting also the discussion whether the baron was more cruel than shown on that picture. I don't think he was cruel ... but like you said somewhere else ... corrupted by war. You show his projective vulnerability, sadness and - above all - fear. His story including his childhood might give us answers on the question why and how he became what he was. He was a hunter after all. If he did not hunt English airmen he hunted animals. Somewhere I wrote that those who are excessive hunters are afraid of their own death and - with that - of their own life. The "thrill of kill" as a possibility to feel oneself.
Much of what we express in our pictures is projection of own wishes and feelings. Yet - looking at all your portraits - I believe that you can look into the souls of human beings. Well, this belief could be my own personal projection.Β

Thank you very much for a very thoughtful commentary!
My interpretation is almost certainly a romantic one, and a reflection of my "own wishes and feelings". I had (and still have) a tendency to write and seek dramatic stories to satisfy my own need for a sense of both adventure and fullfillment.

Sweet Mother of Mary! I didn't know there were other Richthofen fans out there! You have made my day!

All kinds of people out there. Fans of cheese and those who wheeze at the sight of Naruto.
Thank you.

Me painting him in high school was in every way hero worship. What a spectacular bastard he was. I really like your picture.

Love the pic of Baron von Richthoven. I have read so many books on him and he was by far the best pilot of WW1

the way you drew him he does not looks like the guy who downed 82 Allied pilots, or however many it was.

Hm, and why is that? Too soft a look in those blue-grey eyes of his?
Blood-shot eyes and fierce frown would probably have made him look more like the killer-hunter he might have been in truth.
But...
It was not my reason to draw him.
The reason. It was to portray human spirit that wasn't corrupted by war. One that carved a noble legend out of it all.
Still staying human I could symphatize with.
Maybe I am a fool in my ways of follery.

Ahh man, a great piece for the best fighter pilot of the time, if not tops so far in history (Given the technology that is.)

It's a great portrait, though I do feel you humanized him a bit too much. I'm far from being an expert on Baron von Richthofen, I've only seen some documentary films. I also remember seeing a portrait of him and his expression seemed rather cruel, not friendly at all. Can you by any chance post a link to the reference photo?
