And Comet IVs and a Comet V...

Back when Comet IIIs (with their non-matching stripes) were still active and Comet Vs ended up in the middle more often we called these consists "tossed Comet salads"

"Tossed Comet salads" .... That's a weird but fun name. Thank you for the info about the 4s, I only noticed the 5 cab car at the far end.

The IIs and IVs have the same paint/decaling scheme, so they look fine together. And keeping a Comet V at the tail end only separates it.

For contrast, here's a class 2009 vintage Tossed Comet Salad - a now-retired ALP44, Comet II, 2 Comet IVs, Comet III (note the shorter stripe), Comet IV, Comet II, Comet V, Comet II, Comet V.

The other fun thing about those old Frankenstein-mixed sets is that the Comet IIIs had straight air brakes while all the other equipment had electro-pneumatic EPIC brakes, so they would slow at different rates. It made for a bumpy ride going into stations.

Also, surprisingly I don't think I've ever shot from the track 3 platform at Secaucus before. I might have to try it some time.

Mmh, the ALP44 makes a nice dressing on this salad! Great shot and thank you for that example

I assume platform three is the one I took the picture aboth at?`I don't remember it's number but if it's that platform then it's a good spot for late summer evenings, althrough Amtrak sadly heads through on the track right next to you and therefore won't be that good to spot there.

Yes, your shot appears to be from the west end of the platform adjacent to Track 3 (the platforms themselves aren't numbered). The tracks on the upper level of Secaucus are numbered (north to south) 3 B A 2. You're correct that "southbound" Amtrak trains (along with some of the westbound NJ Transit trains that skip Secaucus) run on track 3, so shooting from there doesn't work as well for them. But it covers the other three tracks pretty nicely.

Most of my NEC work at Secaucus has been either from the Track A/B island platform or occasionally Track 2, and a lot of it is looking east rather than west.
