There are a ton of mistakes on this page, but I wanted to just get it up. I'll probably fix it another time.
The purpose of this story is mostly to inform Luna's character. There are obvious parallels to what we know of her story, but also subtle indications of where I want to take the story.

Maybe it's what happened in this version of Equestria. Maybe it's just a story Star Swirl made up. Maybe it's a clue into the nature of the universe, or maybe it's a clue into who Luna and Celestia are.

Star Swirl wrote it.
He drew inspiration from old folk tales about why things are as they are, adding in the classic trope of an immortal being wandering the world on an endless quest to give it greater emotional punch.

Might want to make that a bit clearer, perhaps in the author's note. Given that you're dealing with events in a time of very vague canonicity, people might easily take this to be your idea of what was actually happening, which may confuse them later.

I agree. I thought Star Swirl was actually telling Luna about real mythology in their world. It's lovely, of course, but if I hadn't read the comments I would probably have been confused later on, as Shiva491 said.
