Before them was a field unperturbed by life. That wasteland had clawed its way into existence over two thousand years, fighting against the trees, the grass, the crops grown by human hands. And all the same, it had been nurtured by those same attempts to create life rather than destroy it. Now, pointed spire after spire dotted the flat, empty region, breaking apart the ground where rain had not fallen since time immemorial. The superstitious called it an omen of doom. The rational believed the recent earthquake had unearthed them -- the remains of an ancient civilization lost below the surface. The curious, those three adventurers atop the cliff included, wanted to learn the truth. They would not return.
