Description Commissioned work. More or less a copy of "Snekkja" [link] but with variations and simplifications (for a lower price...). This one is to hang on the wall and is hence only one-sided.

If it was intended to look like the bow of a Viking ship, well done. Beautiful work.

Thorleifr In reply to ArtbyBeans [2014-06-04 19:02:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes it was intended, with obvious modifications in shape in order to be in an upright position..
Thanks!

Might I ask what tools do you use for the detail? I do some wood carving (some shown in my gallery) but I'm always looking for ways to make things easier.

Hi,
For the details of this one, I used just two tools :
- a small "V" shape gouge to trace the outlines (which is the first thing to do) and do the cross-hatching.
- a narrow gouge to empty the recesses. The blade profile is pretty mush like this : ")", maybe a little flatter...
ย That gouge has a "mushroom"-handle to be more comfortable for pushing into the wood.

Thanx, I have inexpensive versions of those. I think that might be my problem.

It would go well on a ship and bring it immense luck

Sweet...
I don't know a thing about woodworking, but I'm guessing the spiral alone is quite a deal!
Also the pattern is very nice. A fine piece, to say the least.

Thanks, yes the spiral is fragile to work on. I did the first model (Snekkja) entirely manually and this one with powertools. Not easier...

Yes, I do put some effort in the photo setup. The dark background is just the curtain of the room where I carve...
