Description A few days ago, the Senate voted down a bill that would enforce equal pay for equal work.  It's disgraceful that this is even a problem.  I've written these letters to my senators - the first to those who voted nay, the second to those who voted yea.  I'm publishing these letters, because I want you to write to your senators and these can serve as a starting point if you don't know what to write.  Feel free to alter them as long as you keep the message loud and clear.

To those who voted against:

My dear Senator,

After discovering the results or lack thereof of the Paycheck Fairness Act, I've decided to write to you in the most tactful manner I possibly can.

Let me begin with the fact that I'm extremely disappointed in you.  You have let down not only me, but you have let down every woman and every girl in the United States of America.  You are my Senator, and I expect respect from you, no matter where you stand on your issues and no matter where I stand on mine.

Paycheck fairness is not an "issue."  It is an unarguable right, and I am disgusted that you pushed this right further away from me, from my mother, from my sister, from my aunt, from every woman and girl in this country.  What is so wrong about voting YES for a corporation to treat its employees fairly?  I'm sure your stance, like every other Republican's, is this:  Government should have no say in what a company does.

Now, let me ask you this then, Senator.  Would you strip away wages?  Would you allow slavery back into the system if the companies wished to do so?  Would you be OK with children being worked to the bone?  And, the critical "issue" here is, Senator, are you all right with theft?  Because this is what it is.  That $10,000 less that I am making?  That was $10,000 that I spent to go to the SAME school to get the SAME credentials with the SAME grades as my fellow male employee.  That was $10,000 that I put forth into the system, and for what?  For $10,000 less in wages.

There is a reason it's called paycheck fairness.  To be fair is to be just, and justice is what should drive this nation.  Not greed.  Not sexism.  Not bigotry.  Justice.

So, Senator, what is your excuse for not championing the justice this country needs?

With all my respect when you have shown me none,
       [your name here]

To those who voted for:

My dear Senator,

This letter is to thank you for championing women's rights and to tell you I am proud to have you as my Senator.  Despite the glum outcome of the Paycheck Fairness Act yesterday, I appreciate your vote in favor of the bill.  While the bill was still shot down, I am comforted to know that you also recognize one of the many injustices of the American workplace.  If we continue to make these injustices known and continue to work together in the fight for equality, we will win.  The only failure is not trying.

        With all my respect,
        [yournamehere]

As a male femniist to a female feminist, give em hell, girl. THey'll never listen to you unless you are so loud that you can never be ignored.

YES! That's the problem. So many people think if we quietly and patiently wait, things will work out themselves. But that's not true. The loudest people are the people who are heard, and oftentimes, the loudest people are the ones who are most counterproductive. So anyone for progress HAS to be loud, otherwise nothing good will get done!

Oh my gosh, I am disgusted right now. I didn't even KNOW that this was happening. According to "anti feminists" there is no problem in the workplace, because supposbly women are getting fair paychecks. You know their lame arguments. And I find THIS. I will def write to my senator about this.

AAAAH I'm so sorry I haven't replied. Your comment is fantastic, thank you so much for writing! Let me know how it goes. I got a letter back from my Senator who voted nay, actually. It was all very personalized, I was surprised. However, he didn't really support his side of the story. He defended himself, naturally. Not with facts, again, naturally, but with vague explanations, things like, it would hurt job availability, (without giving reasons why). It was good that he replied personally, though. It means something about it got to him.

Passed by the House of Representatives, not the Senate.

Thank you for writing these letters. Thankfully, both of my senators voted YES. I still want to spread this message, though.

Thank YOU for the comment! It's wonderful that both your senators voted yea, that's great! But yes, spread the message. (:

I agree that it's sad that this even needs to be an Act. Kinda like when slavery was made illegal. Why on Earth do we need a law that says OWNING OTHER HUMAN BEINGS IS WRONG? Too bad we can't actually have a common sense law.

The problem with common sense is that common sense is not so common. Most people aren't very good at being rational. People are good at being emotional, though, and propaganda proves that.

Figures, not a single republican in the Yea category. I swear, I think the red side of the aisle is more concerned with ensuring that Obama accomplishes nothing and leaves no respectable legacy than with getting anything done whether they support a bill or not. That's about the only reason I see for them blocking a vote on repealing don't-ask-don't-tell: 67% of the country wants it repealed, and most of the senators aren't saying no, but they don't want it passed under Obama because it might actually cast our first black president in a decent light. There is literally nothing left of their platform but obstruction of all things that might even tangentially be perceived as progressive.
Palestinian president Abbas even said Obama is trying his best but Congress isn't letting him accomplish anything. It's as self-evident as the propaganda in Fox News and it's one of the many reasons I'm seriously considering moving to Europe for grad school and maybe for good.

Amen! And I've considered moving to Europe, as well - to Norway or Sweden. Europe has its problems as well, naturally, but statistically speaking, (in northern Europe, anyway), women are treated better, diversity is treated better. However! the reason I've finally decided not to move is that if I move, what will happen to this country? I'm certainly not proud of the USA in its current state. I don't think being proud of a country JUST because it's the country you're in is good at all. However, I want to make the country I'm in, the country I'm from, a country that I AM proud of. And the only way to do that is to stay here and help change it. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't. But I figure trying is better than anything else I can do.

That is true. I guess everyone has to wrestle with whether yo want to go to a place where you and your aspirations are respected or stay in a less preferable place because of a sense of duty to make it better.

I can understand either idea. Being in a place in which you are more likely to thrive helps to make your individual life better, easier, and more enjoyable. As long as you're not doing genuine harm to yourself or others, I don't think that's a bad goal at all. Good luck to you, whatever you decide!

Absolutely right. Both sides are guilty of idiocy, but the Republicans are really letting out all the stops to thwart Mr. Obama.

Ugh, I heard about this. It sucks. I'm Canadian, and we have the same problem here, too.

It's terrible. It shouldn't be a problem in the least. So many people think things are fine the way they are, but they really aren't. Small injustices like these make larger injustices possible, and either way, they are injustices.
