I've been trained in PhotoShop and I can't do anything half as good as that. I am both filled with awe and shame at the same time. XD

For Photoshop WITH a mouse, I like to say this is pretty awesome. ;D I don't have the eye-hand coordination to do something like that, so I give you props~

Drawing just takes lots of practice I guess. I'm probably not one who should be giving advice though, since I only draw as a hobby in my spare time rather than seriously. XD

Yeah, that's me too. Drawing would have to take the back of the line behind school, piano, flute, viola, band, music lessons, and writing. I use all my spare time on dA! I know I just need practice, but I need a teacher (I've tried to teach myself to no avail) and that won't happen for a while. *huff* I'll just be a fanfic writer until then.

Oh man! So busy! One of my friends just draws during class, because she has no other time to do it! XD What kind of stuff do you want to draw?

Haha that's totally understandable! I want to draw comics and anime-style people, then eventually get into painting or something. My aunt, who's an art teacher, said that I'm really good and a quick learner, but the problem is I'm used to having specific things to practice. Like learning to play an instrument, I have to practice scales and songs every week, etc. Then I have a teacher to tell me if I'm doing something wrong. With drawing, I'll look at my picture and think, "this sucks" and not know why. Then I'll stare at it for hours and redo things, trying to figure it out but I can't. *sigh* I guess being a perfectionist isn't a good thing when you're trying to teach yourself something.

It's an awesome advantage to have an art teacher for an aunt, surely she could help you out? In the early stages of learning to draw, maybe drawing using reference pictures would be best, in order to get a better idea of proportions? When I first started drawing anime-style people, I always used to draw their heads too big, and hands too small! Getting proportions right, along with things like perspective, are what I find to be most difficult. It's something that only improves with practice.

Yeah, though she lives a couple states down from me, so I only see her every now and then.
Proportions are fine, because I'll sit there forever getting everything to be perfect. My problem is that my people look flat, and I have absolutely NO idea how to do the whole shading thing. My aunt taught me how to shade spheres and cones but the concept is still really hard.

For shading, you just have to think about what side or angle you want the light source to be coming from, and therefore what side should be illuminated. Although, as you say, some things are easier to shade than others.

Yeah, though my perfectionist brain keeps saying, "Is it bright in the room? What if there's a lamp next to them? If there's a window there, what would it look like?" Haha I know, start small. But god, it's hard to let a drawing be imperfect...

Haha yeah, I see amazing pictures, and I think "HOW ON EARTH DO THEY KNOW HOW TO SHADE SO WELL??". Practice is the only way I guess!
