Weird light. Interesting effect. You lost kinda much details in the highlights. GIMP isn't the best tool around for processing photos. RAWs are 12-16bit, GIMP is only 8. So you are loosing 4-8 bits of details in difficult areas. Try RawTherapee or RAW processing plugins for GIMP - they are good enough to show some fracture on ice in higlights. There is more in the RAW than you can see at first glance.

Ah ok, thanks, that makes sense. I was looking through some other people's photos yesterday and getting frustrated that mine don't have the same clarity and depth, perhaps that is one place (out of many!) that I am going wrong. I will download one of those plug in's and see if that makes a difference.
With this photo I just played around with the toning and the saturation a bit on the computer because I didn't get it quite right on the camera, I was being rushed to hurry up and get along with the rest of the hike!
