The Tamron 90 might be plastic to the touch, but that lens deliver. Supersharp. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Witch 50mm is it you are talking about? 1.8? I am pondering a new camera (going full frame) and for that I probably will get the superb Sigma EX 50/1.4. Look that one up if you like nice soft bokeh. (I've compared it to my Nikkor 50/1.4 Ais and the newest Nikkor 50/1.4 G version, and the sigma is acctually more like a 47 or 48mm lens. For some reason. I dont mind. And it is real good wide open.
Cost a bit though.

Ooh, there we go, a fellow spirit!
The 400 is plain lovely. I've rearly used it above 5.6. Soft and calm bokkeh, very usable wide open. Some say it's acctually at its worst at 5.6. Front heavy due to the massive lens, but really nice to work with. Paired with a D300 and grip I dont think its a problem.
I'd recommend a monopod for shooting longer than 10 min at a time free hand. Maybe a tad soft on the colours compaired to the 50 and 105. The 400 is sharp as nails even wideopen.
If you can find one, it would be worth the price. I gave 1700 Euro for mine. Super mint condition. Came with the 122mm UV-filter and the cougar and additional filters.
Works real real well with the TC 301 x2 extender.

Nah. I did try the latest model of Nikkor 50/1.4 and mine was acctually better wide open. The great thing with the superb old lenses it how cheap you kan find them. And of course, they are a dream to work with.
