Description
Dolphin bird.
Platypodornis adenii.
1-1.18 meter wingspan.
The Great warm shallow expanses which separate Swahilia from mainland Africa call host to a number of fish migrations every year. As Antarctica to the south enters its winters, The various temperate fish species which migrated there to feed on the bountiful summer folly, migrate away to warmer waters with a good Number of these schooling fish species travelling up Adens sea to breed in the shallows of the seagrass meadows and the mangrove coastlines. However various predators in this region are primed to take advantage of these nomadic travellers, From animals which follow them from Antarctica to residents who stay here year round. One resident of Adens sea and the surrounding mangroves is the dolphin bird, a petrel that has adapted group behaviours, hunting tactics and social methods. These birds will hunt in groups of up to 8 or 20, flying in V shaped flocks above the ocean surface looking for schooling fish. When a shoal is spotted, a handful of individuals dive into the water and take on the position of herding them into a tight ball. At this point the birds demonstrate their aquatic skills, as during flight there remarkable webbed feet are tucked away within feathers, but beneath the water they transform into torpedo shaped hunters, fanning out their massive webbed feet and moving them up and down to propel them forward. The underwater group will then signal to the individuals above with their orange flanks, indicating that it is time to feed. From the air they dive into the ball, gobbling down fish before taking their turn in shepherding the fish. After this they swap roles, with the swimming individuals returning to the surface to breathe and dive back down. This cycle continues until every individual has had their fill of fish. When not hunting, they retire to the coast, nesting in the extensive mangrove forest where the group reveals itself to be a family unit.
