A Sceptile is a large species of lizard pokemon found in the tropical forests and Savannah grasslands of the Hoenn and Kanto regions, though it is much rarer in the latter region. It is a hunt and ambush predator, and frequently consumes carrion, eating almost anything it can hunt or find, including the young of its own kind; This is why frequently, Treekos and young Grovyles(as the youth are called by locals) tend to climb up and live most of their young lives in the top of light trees, where most of the most heavy Sceptiles can't reach.
Sceptiles spring in to action at around 40.2Km/h or 25mph, for short but well executed sprints towards its prey, detecting it through smell and stricking at its neck or other delicate areas with its large, razor sharp claws and serrated teeth.
Sceptile's maintain a consistant morphology thoughout their life, with the exception of big yellow scales that portrude from its back, the gradual loss of red pigmentation on the underbelly and the growth of several rows of spines on its tail as it matures, ending up with a palm tree leaf like tail that acts as a powerful deterrent to any pokemon that threatens it or its meal, by delivering powerful strikes that can open quite painful wounds.
Sceptile are generally solitary animals, though they meet in groups in mating season, and can actually coordinate hunting in groups. During this period, males fight over females and territory, standing on their hind legs, and wrestling until the enemy sceptile is pinned down, and females make nests in mounds.

Perhaps one of the most distinctive features of an adult Sceptile is the massive yellow scales on portruding from its back. These scales cover a series of glands that release a scent in mating season, letting other Sceptiles know it is ready for breeding, while the scales themselves denounce its state of health and strength. Once mating season is over, these scales tend to drop or shed off the animals back and grow a new, and the flesh remaining tend to serve as powerful fertilizers, leaving the land that once served as mating grounds lush and green by the next season.
"Mega" Sceptile, are well fed veteran Sceptiles, that grow larger in size, longer spines, more gland scales and increased red pigmentation around the tail. These however, are rare and require of ideal conditions to breed in captivity.

It's physical attributes, habitat, and the attributes of the scales it drops in the ecosystem have, for a long time, put the Sceptile as a religiously significant pokemon for most Hoenn cultures, generally attributted with fertility, sex, agriculture and virility, and as a protector of the trees and forests, and generally tributed for prosperity in any of said subjects. In present day it is a semi-vulnerable species, mostly due to poaching, due to the percieved mystical, sexual and health benefits of consuming the flesh of the scale, and slightly due to habitat loss by human encroachment, however public authorities have begun a campaign to debunk these superstitions, allowing the species a slow but hopeful recovery.

Didn't really like the dinosaur aspect that everyone seems to focus on when drawing Sceptile, so I went with a more Monitor Lizard type feel for it, on the just side, Mega Sceptile is a a dragon type, and a Komodo Dragon is a Dragon type, so it works ;D

The Hoenn Starter Trilogy is complete!!!

Might end up editing it a bit later on though.

It's really refreshing to see a realistic Pokémon drawing that doesn't follow Arvalis' layout.
And also - a non-dinosaurian Sceptile, yay!

This is a lovely piece in itself though; well done in every respect .

Glad you enjoyed it, I did try to distinguish myself with backgrounds, besides the fact that I really like drawing landscapes. It seems odd to me that there are so many saurian Sceptiles

The background really adds to the very natural looking design. It makes it seem like it could be a functioning part of an ecosystem.

I know! A saurian biology wouldn't allow for such quick arboreal movement either. Non-avialaen (not sure if that's spelt correctly) theropods were most certainly not suited for extremely agile arboreal movement - and they're stated as being geckos anyway! Both Treecko and Grovyle are the 'wood gecko Pokemon'.

Oh, heck yes, and I'd love to include it in my group, with your approval, of course. You don't even have to be a member. I'm just looking for the art.
