Description Ahahahaha. Clever name, eh? Yah, roll your eyes at me. I couldn't think of anything better.

Zayne was sitting on Maxie's computer monitor a week or so ago and I gave him a cricket and got the camera out. Snapped a few shots and didn't think anything of it until a little while ago when I was taking pics of the rats for my journal. I REALLY like how this one turned out. Focus could be a tiiiiny bit better but, damn, this photo makes me happy.

Zayne is..... *blinks* Apparently I just added an "e" to the end of his name. It was Zayn, but I keep adding it. I think I like it. Anyhow... Zayn is a Chinese Water Dragon, for the curious. Although he's awesome, I DO NOT recommend Water Dragons to the inexperienced. Several people have expressed a desire to buy one after seeing pics of Zayne, so here's my disclaimer.

Water Dragons need 75-95% humidity. This is VERY hard to maintain. They are very active and get pretty big, so even in the first few months of thier lives, they need a large cage. The temperatures need to be between 84°-88°F during the day (about 8° cooler at night) with a basking spot in the 90's. They can live 10-20 years. If you have the time and money for all that, and still want one, you need to do a lot of research on your own to make sure you're able to care for one. This is a pretty good site: [link]

thats a great shot, and an awesome water dragon.

big ups on the disclaimer. i get so mad when i see people with iguanas and water dragons that dont have the first clue about how to look after them.

Used to have one of these myself....amazing pets!

Incidentally mine was a male and I had to part with him after 3 years.... A long story but it was an ex-girlfriend that made the choice for me. I gave him to a breeder who said he was the finest specimen he had ever seen..... He did have amazing colouring but I had special lighting.... I used to keep a spray bottle handy to give him a daily bath but never found too much of a problem in keeping either Viv temperature or humidity at the recommended norms.

This image looks as though it may be a femal given the light green colouring... but looks old enough to be on mice as well as Locusts.... Healthy looking though!

S/he was a lot of fun. I gave her away last year though, since my attention was turning more toward amphibians.

My dragon never bit, but it would be best to be careful. I did hand feed him a few times, but that's probably when you might get bit. Mine was never aggressive, but he loved his food.

Great picture, and thanks for adding that info about water dragons. I've been wanting to get one(because I'm getting into exotics), but didn't really know much. So that helped a great deal. ^_^

Neither would I! Which is the only reason I've never tried feeding him by hand. Those teeth look pretty sharp.

woah so much detail! I like that this pic is close up but i feel sorry for the lil bug lol

theperfectlestat In reply to poisongurl [2006-07-20 23:59:51 +0000 UTC]

That's why I like it too. I cropped a lot of extra black space off the edges so I wouldn't have to shrink it. The bug was already dead at this point, so it wasn't suffering any.

As you said, more depth would make it better, but it's still pretty effing spiffy. 'Cause of the green. yeah. The green. ^_^

...baby....oil...?

theperfectlestat In reply to Zomai [2006-07-20 23:53:38 +0000 UTC]

He's had a bit of trouble shedding (fucking pet stores... that place messed him up so bad. he's only just getting healthy) Best way to get a bad shed off is to soak him in warm water and baby oil. He has super-model soft skin now.

I tried to think of a pervy reply, but my geekiness won out this time.

Like sweat shops, those pet stores are... =\

Wow... I was really expecting something pervy out of that. Way to smack me in the face, you nerd.

theperfectlestat In reply to Zomai [2006-07-21 18:05:49 +0000 UTC]

I figured I still had pervy points saved up for the comment about rats coming out...

When I got him, Zayne had a bad shed, two burns on his stomach, a respritory infection, an eye infection, and possibly a broken tail. The same place has had starving baby pythons in thier windows since then, most of which probably died. (starving to the point that their skin was all loose and baggy on them. *homocidal lesty* ) If I knew how to get them shut down, I'd do it.

I bet you if you called like... animal control or the SPCA equivalent, you could.

They don't know anything about reptiles, so they don't do anything. It's pretty pathetic. The furry animals all are taken care of, so the authoties assume the reptiles are as well, since they can't tell the difference.

Thanks! *is such a comic book dork* That's his semi-freshly shed color. He turns brown before he sheds, then bright green after.

Neat! Lizards are awesome ^_^ I don't think I'd be able to ever own one though. Especially after reading all the stuff in the description.

Other lizards are easier to care for. Water Dragons are just particularly hard.
