Description “Fëanor, Fingolfin and Finarfin Arafinwë”
Drawn May 16th-17th, 2008
Approximately 8-10 hours to draw (Mostly on the 17th)

This is my gift to . Hope you like it!

So the people in this picture are Noldorian princes from Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion” (from left to right) Fëanor, Fingolfin and Finarfin Arafinwë.

"Finwë was King of the Noldor. The sons of Finwë were Fëanor, and Fingolfin, and Finarfin; but the mother of Fëanor was Míriel Serindë, whereas the mother of Fingolfin and Finarfin was Indis of the Vanyar. Fëanor was the mightiest in skill of word and hand, more learned than his brothers; his spirit burned as a flame. Fingolfin was the strongest, the most steadfast, and the most valiant. Finarfin was the fairest, and the most wise of heart; and afterwards he was a friend of the sons of Olwë, lord of the Teleri, and had to wife Eärwen, the swan-maiden of Alqualondë, Olwë's daughter." The Silmarillion, Chapter 5 "Of Eldamar and the Princes of the Eldalië"

Fëanor Curufinwë was the son of Finwë and Míriel. After he was born his mother died and Finwë married an elf of the Vanyar named Indis. Fëanor’s wife was Nerdanel, and he had seven sons: Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod and Amras.

“…Fëanor grew swiftly, as if a secret fire were kindled within him. He was tall, and fair of face, and masterful, his eyes piercingly bight and his hair was raven-dark; in the pursuit of all his purposes eager and steadfast. Few ever changed his courses by counsel, none by force. He became of all the Noldor, then or after, the most subtle in mind and the most skilled in hand.” ~ “The Silmarillion” Chapter 6; “Of Fëanor and the Unchaining of Melkor”

Fingolfin was the eldest son of Finwë and Indis. He was the brother of Finarfin and half-brother of Fëanor. He had two sons and a daughter: Fingon, Turgon and Aredhel.

Finarfin Arafinwë was the son of Finwë and Indis. Brother of Fingolfin, and half brother of Fëanor. Married Eärwen and had four children: Finrod Felagund, Angrod, Aegnor and Galadriel. He was the only one who had golden hair of Finwë’s sons.

So who is Gil-galad's father? I know that he's a high king and a Noldor so does that makes him finwe's grandson?

Theophilia In reply to LiveByTheCreed26 [2013-06-12 20:03:50 +0000 UTC]

Um, I think there are different texts that say different things. One is that Gil-Galad is Fingon's son, and another says he's Orodreth's son.

This was such a wonderful surprise I go on tumblr to look for stuff posted on the Silmarillion and on of the first things I see is a link to this. What are the odds. I love it!

Yeah sorry, not much time for anything with school I'll try to put some stuff up soon. That and I've been wary of this place since I started getting malware.

No I love it! I just finished reading the Silmarillion seriously only a few hours ago and (after tell my brother and my friends. ) went to look for pictures and posts about this wholly remarkable book, I was pleasantly surprised to find this on Tumblr. "Oh my gosh I know this person, she's awesome!" not gonna lie was pretty much my first reaction.
Don't be embarrassed this is amazing, the attention to detail is incredible, (the faded designs on the shoes) I wouldn't have the patience for such things.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Yeah, malware is....

The Silmarillion is seriously my favorite book. Ever. In the world. In the history of life, the universe, and everything. Yep. You'd think that sentiment would show up in my art somewhat. *snort*

I was going to try to make another reference to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, alas, I can't think of anything to say except Don't Panic.
It was really a great book, some parts took a while for me to get into but on the whole it was amazing. Teach me to leave dA I needed the support while finishing it because all my friends (all of whom are big LOTR fans) told me not to bother with it. But it's one of my brother's favorite books and the more he talked about it the more I've wanted to read it so I finally did. He didn't steer me wrong because I love it. The Tale of Beren and Lúthien might be one of my favorites. Túrin's tale was unbelievably sad,the fates just were not on his side. Yeah, it might take me a while to get over Túrin, I shouldn't talk about it. Sorry, I'll stop talking before I can't shut up. Most people can shut me up fairly easily about it, they just look disinterested but you can't tell that sort of thing on the internet.

Great drawing, and here's something to shed light on the fate of each one:

Fëanor's bloodline pretty much died, though there's a small possility that Maglor still lives, but alone and unhappy.
Fingolfin's bloodline still lives through Idril, Turgon's daughter, and thus in Elrond, Arwen, Elladan and Elrohir.
Finarfin still lives in Tirion and rules the Noldor there as their King, because he regretted and turned along the way when Feanor left Middle-Earth. All his sons that left died, but as I understand it, Finrod got reincarnated with the help of Mandos and now lives in Aman (possibly rejoined with Amarië). Galadriel swore no oaths when Fëanor did, but the left to Middle-Earth because of her own desires (similar to Finrod's) instead. She returned in Valinor as victorious.

Oh, why thank you! Details are my particular favorite things to do. I love cramming as much detail and borders and extravagence into a piece as I can. And often it overwhelms, but occasionally it works to the advatage of the pictureas as oppsed to its detriment.

I love how you made them similar and yet different. And their expressions are great too, although I always thought Feanor ad Fingolfin both to be kind of arrogant, while Finarfin to be the meek, kind, peaceful one (Here in this picture Fingolfin looks a little sheepish to me, but that might just be me ) Really amazing!

Theophilia In reply to Niphredill [2009-06-12 21:44:26 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Heheh, yeah, I've always thought of Feanor as arrogant, Fingolfin as noble, and Finarfin as clear and level-headed.

I was trying to make Fingolfin look noble, but I suppose....he kind of looks more bland and blank staring to me.

Young faces, with eyes looking into eternity. That's the first impression. And such dignified postures.

The fabrics and ornaments you draw are awesome. Period.
Do you reference those designs of gowns, I wonder?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to Ardariel [2008-09-12 21:07:37 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thank you!!!

Umm, I suppose it depends what you mean. I have a sketchbook with lots of different clothing designs from various periods of human history, lots of fantasy designs, dress designs, etc, etc. I'm usually unable to get pictures of people actually *wearing* the dress that I want to draw, so I just take the design and make up how I think the wrinkles migt fold, etc. (I'm still terrible at wrinkles )

Or do you mean the designs ON the clothing, not just the design of the clothing? In that case, once again with the same sketchbook I have compiled little designs with variations and other things that I addor subtact to however I feel ft. I get the design inspirations from many places too, then I try to remember them and jot them down in one place. Some designs I use over and over again, like this pattern especially with different variants: [link] You'll probably have noticed that one.
