Description "Portrait of an Emperor: Calthonan III"
November 15th, 2009
6-8 Hours Maybe, maybe more
Pastel or Chalk, Pencils, and finger smudging

I did this as my weekend project for AP art (still working on another watercolor, I hope to have that up here hopefully within a few days). One of the guys in my class did two REALLY cool pictures with chalk so I wanted to try it out too and see what I could do with it. I think these are pastels, but I'm not really sure of the difference. In any case, I'm very pleased with how this picture turned out. I had a lot of trouble about his eyes. In fact, I had to completely redo his face at one point because everything was aggravating me far too much. I redid his eyes (they were the perfect color too! ) and am happy with the result. Before he had this dead-pan stare, like a deer in the headlights look that annoyed me to no end. That got fixed, obviously. Two things that I wanted to do for his eyes, 1.) I wanted them to not be a gaping dumb stare. 2.) I wanted the eyes to follow whereever you went. Hopefully I've achieved both of those. I like how vivid his eyes are. That took me awhile to do. Another thing as well, his cloak was kind of ridiculous to do, mostly because I had no reds. So what you see here is a mixture of hot pink, electric blue and earthy-orange. And some black and whites for highlights as well.

Calthonan is one of my favorite characters, probably the one most central to the plot and one who is becoming more facinating each day to me. More than most of my other characters, he has been making leaps and bounds in his character development, and this just inside of my head. I did another portrait of him here: [link] His bride-to-be is the Princess Atherial who I drew here: [link] Lord Mornai and Lady Rhianna are two of his cousins on his mother's side (they're the children of her sister).

By the way, the bottom is a little blurry probably because I had to take a photograph of the picture simply because it's much too big for my scanner. And the general blurriness all around.

Thanks! ^^ He's one of the main charcaters from a story I'm writing. Well, "writing" but I haven't gotten much of that done...

Thank you! I was very proud of this one b/c chalk is such a messy medium.

This is quite well executed. I love the way the patterns on his clothing seem to stand out and blend in at the same time.Gorgeous use of selective blending.

Awww, why thank you! Heheh, yeah, I was a little limited in my choice of colors, so I didn't want too much hot pink sticking out in his robe.

Wow, this is very good! It reminds me of the Byzantine style of art.

I must speaketh the truth...Thou art much able with the creative hand bestowed upon thy personage. In other words, you've got mad skill, dude! Good job! As fun as chalk or pastels are, I find it impossible to work with them, so I'm doubly impressed with this piece.

Bawww!! Thanksies!!! My main problem is that they are so messy, and sometimes they aren't sharpened enough for my purposes, but other than that, I really like them because of the control and everything.

That is GORGEOUS. I love chalk pastels. They're one of my favorite things ever, and you really ... that's just amazing. You nailed the Roman look too- it's like one of those portraits, but better. (And of course by better I mean more brightly colored. The Greeks would agree with me on that, I'm sure.)

Thanks!! I really like them as a medium too! They have nice control, they look good and they have very vivid colors. My only real problem is that they are so darn messy.

Brightly colored is good.

Oh yes. I've had to wash shirts three times or more to get the stains out of the sleeves... Do you use your fingers, those little paper smudging tools, or a combination of both? I prefer to use my fingers as much as possible, but some details are just too fine...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Theophilia In reply to Aranov [2009-11-30 22:09:34 +0000 UTC]

My fingers, mostly. Because the only other blenders I had were all pencil-leaded-up. And I tried to use paper towels, but that REALLY didn't work very well and it scraped. So overall I think my fingers was the best blender I had!

Yeeeah... paper towels really don't. Toilet paper twisted into a point works ok, but by far fingers are my favorite.
