Description A super random thingy done between commissions to show my appreciation to the news: Sherlock will arrive in Italy, too! Wo-ho.

I fear the italian fandom. Why, yes, I'm Italian. So what? It isn't what I meant. There are really horrible examples of fangirls here, I start to shake at the bare thought (I’m sure that there are fangirls as scary as that anywhere, but the problem is that I understand them when they talk, more or less.). We call them "bimbeminkia". I can already say that they’ll be divided in three separated groups:

- the "OMG but they’re too gay, I’m disgusted"
- the "OMG they’re so cool and now I’m going to write some NC17 fics that will make everyone understand istantly how much not only I’m awful at English, but at my own language too, showing exactly how ignorant I am!!1!!"
- the "nooo they’re too ugly (the fact that Cumberbatch is probably one of the five man that have made me most hot and bothered in the last, like, five years, is a stupid detail)!!! SH2009 forever!" ignoring any other Holmes in movie history.

But more than everything else, as much as I can appreciate Italian dubbing and the great job that my yellow countrymen do (it’s known that italian dubbing is one of the most appreciated if not the best)… I fear the adaptation. I saw how it went for Castiel and a lot other characters that I love, and thinking about Sherlock dubbed in Italian makes me anxious. Maybe they’ll pleasurably surprise me, but…

Do we have someone with a voice like Cumberbatch’s? Not really. Someone that comes close? Sure enough. Question: could that person manages to keep that tone of voice? Detached, not exactly well-meaning, arrogant and warm nonetheless? IHIGHLYDOUBTIT.

And then, let’s say it all. I don’t know English that well but I can recognize British English from American English. The dubbing will pretty much erase all the writers’ effort, goodbye to the heavy Brit English XD

I keep on hoping that the small fangirls will avoid it because the actors aren’t really pretty according to canon because for now it’ll be aired just on a paid channel.

Dedicated to sherlock_italia , a lovely community full of nice people where I can finally write in Italian about interesting subjects \O/

ps. The italian sentences in the last panel are Italian proverbs: "Tanto va la gatta al lardo, che ci lascia lo zampino", "Chi dorme non piglia pesci", "Meglio un uovo oggi che la gallina domani?", "A buon intenditor poche parole", "Ambasciator non porta pena" and "Batti il ferro finchè è caldo" XD

************

EDIT

Since someone was interested...here is a short video where you can hear them dubbed .

As I said....I'm scared. AND I WAS RIGHT. Take a look, this is a preview of the series.

OH MY GOD, SHERLOCK, I'M SO SORRY. CUMBERBITCH, WE'RE ALL SO SORRY. They gave you the same dubber of DAWSON LEERY. DAWSON LEERY. HE DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE ON HIM, BUT ON YOU...YOU...no, ok, I don't know if I'll watch it. Martin, at least, seems to be a little luckier.

If you want to suffer as me and ~yawed ...click on "GUARDA IL VIDEO".

But be warned, it could cause you a feral attack of stomach ulcer.

This drawing sums up exactly how I feel when I watch things dubbed in Italian. C:
I have enormous respect for those that undergo the task of dubbing things like this, but, after watching the brilliance of the English edition, it's odd to hear Benedict Cumberbatch with another voice.
I'm part Italian, and whenever I go to visit family, I end up watching Italian dubbed TV.
Some of it is... watchable. Others... not so much.
House in Italian... did not work. In the slightest.
Long story short... adoro il fumetto, e capisco perfettamente cosa vuoi dire.

Although, the dubbing artist for Sherlock does speak wonderfully quickly. C:

Hey, hi! Where are you from? °u° Sorry, I don't want to sould like a stalker, but you're the first English-Italian person I meet XP ...uh, I don't actually know which language I should use to reply to your lovely comment! Let's use both English and Italian!
I have a friend who is a dubber-wannabe but she agrees with us: often Italian dubbing simply doesn't pay enough attention. Sometimes it seems like they just haven't been listening at all the original movie/series. What the hell.

Ahah, I've always watched House in Italian, actually...and even if I'm a great supporter of original versions...I'm pretty fond of the Italian one, I can't help it :°D
Contentissima che il fumetto ti sia piaciuto però <3

Thank GODTISS. A slow Sherlock would kill me, seriously!

I live in the south of England, but when I go to Italy, I either go to Tuscany, or to Sicily. ^^
Hehe, you can reply in either language, I can understand both. But Italian was my second language, so I read it a lot better than I can write it. ^^,
What makes me laugh most is when the English-speaking actor has finished talking, and the dubbing carries on. ;D

Maybe it's because I've always watched it in English. Or because I love Hugh Laurie's voice. The Italian dubbing just sounds so different to me. C:

Haha, si, si. Le sue deduzioni sarebbero impossibili. ;D

Haha I totally love the comic! And I do understand what you're saying. I also live in Germany, a country in which dubbing is ordinary, and in which most people don't care to watch the original movie. I often try to convince people to at least try the original, but often get very, very rude answers. But, seriously, why don't they see?
Acting consists of two parts: Body (as facial expressions and gestures) and voice. So, with watching dubbed movies, one only gets to see half of the acting, half of what the actor worked hard for to show us! It's just sad.

Oh well. I am still hoping Germany will follow countries as Sweden and the Neatherlands. Hope dies last...

thenizu In reply to Giftstift [2011-11-15 12:27:58 +0000 UTC]

I totally, like, TOTALLY agree. Play a character with your face is WAY MORE SIMPLE than to give them your voice.

Well, the dubbing industry gives work to a lot of people, but no dubbing would mean more culture

Oh, I understand your concerns... I once was forced to watch the German dubbed version... Ugh It really isn't nearly as great as in English :/

Haha, and no, I don't understand a word from the Italian dubbing even though I spent 7 years learning Latin..

Well, it is not the worse translated series I've seen (that's definetely the German Dr Who version *shudder*), but ut's odd how impressing scenes just seem ridiculous (and we're not talking about the BATMAN!scene in the pilot ). I really don't like BC's German voice and it's quite odd how they still say "Sie" instead of "du" despite sharing a flat and all...

I strongly recommend to stay with the original

Britishness doesn't real translate well does it I have no fear about my countries dubbing as we never get a chance to lol we just get the American ones...
I fear no dub will ever be good enough, it must be really hard to get a voice actor that suits Benedict because he is quite unique.
but the this is hilarious

You know, I have listened the french version of BBC Sherlock. Sure french language - as italian's - is beautiful but … we can NOT replace Cumberbatch's voice, don't we? If you watch a British TV series, you need to hear the actors' original voices. Because if you do not, the atmosphere of the scenes should be broken.

Anyway funny comic, I love the "paper" effect you used on the background, plus your choises of coloring, very light

awesome, and so real ...
I've tried to watch it dubbed in French, I just couldn't stand it. It ruins EVERYTHING. I can understand why no one who watched it dubbed thought it was a great show. Usually dubbing is quite well done here, but with Sherlock it's the worst I've ever heard, it's not even matching their lips while talking... (/end rant)
