I never heard someone hating on Jerry, actually. Maybe you just bumped into someone who know their Cartoons superficially, and see it as the usual formulaic toon. In fact, even if Tom was the typical loser(because he usually deserved it), the fights between Tom and Jerry were more even and the outcome varied a lot more than one may think.

You are right about the comments, it's that to me comments on the internet are just what they are, random words written by who knows who - who knows why, so I take them with a grain of salt.
About Tweety Bird, there's a big difference with Jerry. Tweety's success is exactly what his creators were aiming for. The character is the typical "passive victim" of formulaic toons, so they worked on his appearance and personality: he's so cute, peaceful, and kind, and always gentle with Sylvester even when he's trying to eat him (until he finally understands that he's just an irredeemable bad pussycat!); and that gives him an aura of innocence so adorable that is impossible not to like him. And all of that makes him even more likeable when he hits back at Sylvester, because that cat REALLY deserves it! (And that's why we love Sylvester too, obviously).
About Tom&Jerry instead, as I said before, I guess people do not notice that their cartoons were actually balanced, and were not a formulaic toon with "the bad versus the good\innocent one", like Sylvester and Tweety. Tom and Jerry were almost on the same level: Tom is a cat that wants to eat the mouse at all costs, or at least, being bigger, have fun bullying him; so, for this reason the mouse obviously likes to be a pain in the a** of the cat; and so.. the cat loves to be a jerk to the mouse! And so on. They really have fun to be enemies, it's a totally different dynamic; in fact Jerry "loses" many times, contrary to Tweety, for example. To me that's what those people who say they hate Jerry may not understand or notice.

Now that we're all older, we can clearly see that Jerry is an abusive asshole.Β
