Description

EDIT: I've cropped the picture to focus more on Marin and Miran. The full view is here !

Round 1: Civilian

When she isn’t fighting evil, 19-year-old Marin Lan is a student at culinary school. Her dream is to be a pastry chef at a high-end restaurant, but she still has a long way to go: her mentors say her technique is clumsy and her creations aren't fancy enough, and they give her a lot of flack for it.

Shortly before she became a senshi, Marin was considering dropping out of school because she was afraid of being a failure. But after meeting Miran, who encouraged her to not lose hope, she’s since changed her mind and is now determined to prove herself.

Since then, Marin's been staying up late at night to perfect her skills. Here, she’s working on her latest dessert, a blue velvet cake. The dessert is inspired by how she became a senshi and met Miran -- the ombre blue represents her fuku colors, and the jewel she’s placing is a sugar replica of Miran’s star seed, the one that Marin ate. To balance the richness of blue velvet, the cake is dotted with tiny raspberry and lime jellies and laid upon a raspberry swirl. Raspberries are Marin’s favorite food, and she’ll find any excuse to include them in her dishes.

Agh, I think I've finished on time! I was a tad ambitious and I wanted to practice with perspectives and foreshortening and backgrounds and color schemes -- basically everything I haven't really practiced. Overall I think there's some room for improvement (such as the fact that I really need to draw faster), but I'm pretty proud of what I've done.

If it's not clear, Marin is the dark-haired girl in the chef uniform, and Miran is the glowing blue-haired girl keeping her company. As an effect of absorbing Miran's powers, Marin takes on some qualities of Miran's appearance when she becomes a senshi, namely her hair and eye color (which is why she doesn't look the same as her senshi form).

You'll also notice Miran's holding a notebook with some drawings of desserts, and the one on the bottom bears a resemblance to a certain moon princess...

As always, feedback and critique is very much appreciated!

Wow Gii! This looks gorgeous!! The problem I see mostly is that the background looks like it could use better smoothing, but I know it's hard to completely smooth out colored pencils and that scanners sometimes pick it up worse than it should be. That and I don't know a good smoothing techniques with colored pencils, nor do I know for sure which brand you're using because that might change whic ones work better..

Oh yes, I totally agree -- I think that the trick is to color in small regions and not try to sweep over everything, but I was worried time was running out so I did rush that a little bit  But thank you anyways!

I really wouldn't know. I lost patience with colored pencils a long time ago, mostly because I hadn't used them in a while and I was starting to learn digital coloring anyway.
