Description Here's a piece I finished weeks and weeks back now-- a commission for a gent who collects big group shots of characters from various comic-related universes. He has a great list of pieces, and some you can see at:

[link]

Anyhoo, he asked me to work up an homage recreation for the cover to Secret Wars II #1, originally pencilled by legend John Byrne and inked by Terry Austin-- including characters from a sizable reference packet he provided. A daunting task!

Listed on this cover you can find:

Dark Claw (Amalgam)
Prime (Ultraverse)
Invincible (Image)
Zot! (Scott McCloud)
Captain America aka Bucky Cap (Marvel)
Spartan (Wildstorm)
Songbird (Marvel)
Spider-Boy (Amalgam)
Saturn-Girl (DC)
ROM (Marvel/Parker Bros)
Firestar (Marvel)

You can see the original Byrne-rendered piece here:

Enjoy!

Glad to do it-- and as much as I'd like to take credit for his inclusion, it was requested by the buyer.

what size paper are you doing these huge group shots on? traditional comics board? i tend to have trouble drawing small figures with any degree of detail.

thejeremydale In reply to fason [2009-03-31 14:32:28 +0000 UTC]

Just your standard 11 x 17 boards from Eon. I do as well, so I took a bit more time making sure the smaller characters didn't look terrible. hehehe

My only problem with this piece is that I couldn't instantly tell that it was Captain Bucky, not Captain Steve. I absolutely love the selection of characters.

thejeremydale In reply to NuclearConvoy [2009-03-31 11:58:43 +0000 UTC]

Very cool-- that was the intention, since Cap was such a pivotal, iconic part of the original cover. That, and I'm not too fond of the idea of drawing Bucky Cap, even if I DO like the character.

Thanks! The reference packet he sent over was sizable, so I spent awhile picking out the ones I thought would work well in the piece.

Ah, well, if it was intentional: Job well done!

I actually much prefer Bucky Cap's costume to the original one (maybe through over exposure?) and Bucky is doing a damn bang-up job as Cap, IMO, and Brubaker is writing the book so damned well. I honestly can't remember the last time I found Captain America interesting as Steve Rogers....maybe the Infinity Gauntlet, when he stood up to Thanos no matter how hopeless it was.

thejeremydale In reply to NuclearConvoy [2009-03-31 14:35:45 +0000 UTC]

Eh, it loses a lot in contrast and being "iconic". It's a nice change to try out, but it's a standard Ross design, really: "ADD BLACK STUFF SO I DON'T NEED TO DRAW CRAP ON THEIR LOWER HALF." His Spidey design was the same in that regard. The Puerto Rican Flag on his chest doesn't thrill me, either. Despite popular opinion, Cap wears the COLORS of the flag, not the actual flag. In the current design, it's an actual country's flag. Yikes.

I agree, though-- Bru is rocking Captain America right now. That's the ONLY reason they could get away with bringing back Bucky/killing Steve/redesigning the suit/etc etc. I just wish Steve Epting drew more of the issues!

NuclearConvoy In reply to thejeremydale [2009-04-01 01:31:29 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, I think it looks more iconic in that it has the colourful parts stand out far more.
I never really noticed the Puerto Rico thing.

And, yeah, Epting needs to draw more of the issues. His art really compliments Brubaker's writing in just the right ways.

'Iconic' only works if there's suitable contrast-- there's some, but the black boots on black pants doesn't help matters. Don't get me wrong, it's one of the best redesigns he's had (90's IRON ARMOR CAP, POUCHES CAP, CAPWOLF, etc etc).

In the perfect world Marvel at least give us trades of all of them (even the Marvel "revamp" if they had to), cause iirc some of those series were better than some of the mainstream ones today.

There's a Secret Wars trade AND hardcover, I know that much. Secret Wars II? I'm sure it'll hit eventually.

One can only hope. Then again, I don't think trades have much respect even now... At least at the idea of collecting all the older stuff.

I dunno-- graphic novels are the only thing showing profit growth in bookstores, and every week more and more are compiled and released-- I wouldn't be surprised to see it, to be honest.
