While I am disappointed with the movie, I don't completely hate it. I mean, I did like Zilla's design(I refuse to call him "Godzilla"), and I also liked seeing Jean Reno in a monster movie, and I really loved the caricatures of Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, but other than that, the movie is full of problems.

Hi there, i really dunno, i would have loosely sketched a generic plane shape based on my minds eye version of a spitfire, then when finalizing the details i would have sought out some reference via google , i dont slavishly copy just use the ref to fill in the gaps in my knowledge.Β
So you can safely class this plane as a badly drawn P-51 Mustang or a shiny example of a Gurch-hybrid-plane ver.2.0.Β
I know that when planning this I did consider drawing scrambling some bi-planes as a nod to King Kong but it felt like a completely different era. Glad I settled for this style. Β

ya i think it fits. i was just loosly guessing at the airplane model cause i was curious, though i had an inkling that you had basically just freehanded it, not nessisarilly making it a model of a real airplane. an amazing drawing all the same.

Phew than you, i basically bluffed the aircraft design , its shown from a very basic angle Β I'm just pleased that its held up to scrutiny Β
Ive had a couple of other people ask me about the planes breed , never thought viewers would pay much attention to points like that, Β i just needed something to get in and out fast , in future I'll invest more thought into such details.

It's lovely. I can imagine the motion and the sound. And I love the fact that it's not a modern jet fighter.

Thanks for a great compliment, im familiar with his fantasy work on the likes of Lord of the Rings. I dont feel i actually have a style, i draw according to the tools i use and the time i have, sometimes the image is rough sometimes more refined.

Interesting concept. A lock jaw type beast of a chaotic nature.
Though I do feel an injustice was done with that movie in 98' when they gave that beast the name "Godzilla", I still paid to see it, bought a vhs, bought a dvd, was gifted the blu-ray, watched the animated show and still own taco bell memorabilia! Besides, without him this [link] wouldn't have been possible!

Me too! I did all of the above, and seen that very clip many a times!
I did enjoy my original cinema outing but must admit i tried to watch the film again not so long ago and have now deemed that it stinks worse than the pile of fish they tried to bait him with!
Its a case of the films looking better in the snapshots in my mind.
Also, that groovy spin as he first appears in the linked clip pure disco magic! (-:

Hey thanks for liking this.
I'm full of equal part trepidation , studio have a track record of spectacularly screwing up remakes....but I'm sure I'm still gonna love it.
What really has me chomping at the bit in excitement is Gullermo del Toros PACIFIC RIM!!
Strap line goes " up from the depth, thirty stories high" it's gigantic alien beasts versus an army of psychically controlled giant robots....and Gullermo always does engaging creatures.

Quite the gape on this guy. He might not be the most anal-retentive "faithful" take on Big G, but that burly, jowl-laden mug lends plenty of brutish character. Oddly enough, the last Giant Gila Monster(R) I can recall hailed from an episode of Godzilla: the Series, that 'toon spinoff of the 1998 film.
Speaking of which, I actually hit said film up twice whilst it was in theaters. Not iconic by any reckoning, but hey-Jean Reno, Hank Azaria & Ferris Bueller Broderick. I've spent more time on less amusing fare.
Finally, interesting (and spot-on rendered) choice of warplane. If we were being chronological nerds, I'd point out that the P-51 Mustang's heyday was back in the mid-1940's...but who's to say Big G wasn't wandering the depths prior to that nuke-test in the fifties?

Hey there geekspace and a big thanks for your monster sized comment, I appreciate all feedback, so i kindly thank you for taking the time to write.Β
Yeah i could have easily used the Godzilla from movie-land as a template, but if the movie executives came to their senses and gave me obscene amounts of dollar I'd need to make my Godzilla movie i would want the beast redesigned to put my own spin on the legend. This is only one of my own version , i actually have some other drawing of this thrilling creature done in various different fashions.Β
Admittedly THAT Godzilla movie is both good and bad in equal measure, i know is that i had a great evening when i went to watch that film and that enjoyment factor accounts for a lot. Id love to watch it again someday soon, (in fact any big monster movieΒ )
Well spotted there eagle eyes! Yep the plane along with the building i purposely tried to place in a 1940s setting, you certainly do pay attention to all the details! Β (-: Β
Why the 1940s era? I felt it would have been even more of an interesting battle, Godzilla stomps into town, the army are mobilized and they would really have to really hammer away at him to beat him back. The communications and the equipment would have been a lot slower than modern advancements. Β C' mon it was a toss up between drawing a sleek jet or a mustang fighter plane, i decided to fire up my mustang engines on this occasion.Theres nostalgia and a certain romance attached to that era,Β I feel that today you could just text everyone in the city have it evacuated in hours and then deliver a anti monster nuke directly on Godzilla nose from hundreds of miles away using an ipad app.Β

You've got a real point about long-range weaponry these days...once I started boning up on laser-guided bombs & anti-ship missiles in high school, the Visual Range Rule(TM) monster-flick armed forces follow started making much less sense. And hey, even in the 40's you've got artillery pieces, naval guns & high-altitude bombers capable of plastering the general area with hot steel from at least a mile or two away/up...though whether anything short of the nuke's really gonna end Big G is quite another matter. Either way, I certainly wouldn't mind watching the King try to slog his way through the godawful hail of 5, 8 & 15-inch fire a WWII-era battle group could unload...though when/if he made it through that, I'd pity the tank crews waiting on shore.
Anyhow, speaking as a enthusiast of military aviation from WWII onward, the Mustang was indeed sex in chrome.

I thought you were gonna blast me for having the incorrect rivets in my Mustang or miss corresponding teeth in Zillas lower jaw (-:
But yeah youre right , would a nuke end him? He was concieved by nuclear detonations so a direct hit on the face should just be like a kiss from his mum. Awwwww

Nitpicking has its place, but keeping creative liberties in mind, I try not to get too hot & bothered about an iconic beast that has undergone revisions minor & major over five decades & counting. 'Sides, as a fellow G-fan ([link] ) noted in a recent discussion with yours truly, personality (i.e. ill-tempered & indomitable) should matter more than visual particulars when it comes to the King.
I get the impression that with most incarnations of Godzilla, if other monsters can inconvenience him by means physical or zappy, Ground Zero of a 20+ megaton blast would do the trick...on the other hand, if he's a bit too far away from the main event's kinetic force, its fallout would work just the way you posited.
"FEEEEEED ME, SEYMOUR!"
Funny thought: even the 1998 "Godzila" could give WWII-era forces a merry chase within the concrete jungle, given his speed & relative durability. He might not be so insanely impervious as the Eastern standard, but it does take a dozen no-shit air-to-surface missiles (AGM-84 Harpoons, to be precise) to do him in. A 40's-era military would pretty much need to chop down the whole damn city for an equivalent effect, especially if the fish-trap strategy didn't work on its first try.
Anyhow, it's great to discuss this stuff with actual artists. Thanks muchly for your time, Gurchy.
