When I look at Carl and Markus I wound up seeing a backstory like Markus lost his parents in this AU since he's the appropriate age of his appearance (Young adult) That or his grampa and somehow he got crippled or possibly born with an ailment thus he couldn't use his legs. So he ends up getting a robot that reminds him of his dad or grampa to take care of him like he had a family again.
.....OR I'M LOOKING TOO INTO IT XD
It's just how I saw it since this is a role reversal and I wound up thinking of the backstory for Markus being in a wheelchair. I'm so sorry if I made ppl sad with this thought ;v;
