Well hopefully the author got loyalties from the movie profits. Profits that helped him pay his finances and bills while finishing the fourth book. That'd be one good thing about the movie.

Actually in the movie, Roran left to avoid joining the army. Apparently he was coming of age that year and soldiers had already been around to force able-bodied young men to join up. While it was mentioned in the book that most of Galbatorix's armies were people who were forced to join, Carvahall was so far removed that only travelling merchants bothered to go there. The only reason the soldiers were there is the book, were support for the Ra'zac on their quest to recover Saphira's egg, stolen from Galbatorix.

The movie was very underwhelming. On top of what's above, the movie managed to end almost exactly halfway through the book series. Like seriously, if you are gonna make a movie on a book series, GIVE IT A PROPER ENDING!
