Description Oscar the black leopard living at Safari's Sanctuary. Not a whole lot to say about him, he came to use with a severe case of depression after his mate died at another facility and we brought him to Safari's to live with our female Mirage but since it took him so long to recover we decided if he moved back home like he was originally going to he would just go back into his depression so now he lives with us permanently.

To some, depression such as Oscar's would come as a surprise or at least something to discount as being "like" emotion. However, ethology tells us that the part of the brain responsible for emotions can be found in many animals, not just humans. We cannot say for certain that their depression is exactly the same as ours, but to say they cannot experience the fundemental emotional pain we do when they lose something so precious to them...well that is simply lunacy. Thankfully, a growing body of scientists now accepts the reality that animals do feel more complex emotions than was initially given credit for.

Considering the ethical implications of situations like Oscar's, I would say that learning to understand animals on a more emotional level is a benefit that should be sought by all who find themselves taking care of such creatures. Good on you folks for being able to understand him like you did.

Poor fella he's had a rough life. Panthers don't mate for life in the wild?, I suppose though that his mate was the only thing he had. And people say animals are stupid, this poor guy went through depression afterwards, sounds like some humans to me. Actually most humans appear to have forgotton what it means to be married.

In the wild leopard are solitary, but captive animals can learn to live together and with Oscar, even enjoy it. Before he recovered he would eat very little and pull his full on his back and belly. I've seen some odd companionships out here, we have Simba the African grey parrot and Charlie the Orange winged Amazon parrot that are best friends, and our latest is Latte the Brown lemur and Gertrude the skunk that sleep curled up together. =^-^=

Hmm I got a fishtank complete with fish from a friend and found that two of the most different fish you could possibly find made a friendship. They were a giant danio and a diamond tetra. When the tetra wanted to play he'd swim over to the danio and flare his fins at him then bolt, and they'd chase each other all the time. If the tetra wasn't running the danio would be sure to come over and nose at him. Sure enough when I bought a few baby giant danios after the tetra died, the danio passed on his tricks to his predesessor, a albino giant that I bought because he was the only danio in his tank and I felt bad for him. He still carries on his tradtions today
Heres a Giant danio: [link]
And heres a diamond tetra:

They aren't technicly blue, but the silver scales on thier sides will come back green, blue, or even purple in reflected light. A better name would be Mirror tetra or Rainbow

I love giant danios, they're so pretty, when/if my platys and mollies are gone I'd love to replace them with some giant danios.

They should be able to coexist peacefully Especially with the mollies, I used to have a huge pair of the sailfin dalmations and boy were they gorgeous, Dotty and Bandit, as the male had a black patch over one eye.

I'm sure they'd get along but I think I'm at the limits of my tank right now, I've got rasboras, gold tetras, three wagtail platys, and three mollies.

Ah I had harliquin rasboras. Pretty fish but unfortunately they were just the right size for my female betta to eat...

I guess it's cause he's a melanistic (black) leopard, it makes his whiskers sort of orangish brown, our female black leopard's whiskers are just the same. I love it when black house cats have white whiskers, they're so cute. =^-^=
