Art for my Balto 3 AU!

When the jobs of the mail dogs depend on a race against an airplane, Balto sees their odds of winning to be impossible and guiltily refuses to lead the team. Kodi nearly loses hope when a former champion named Steele offers to take Balto's place in the race. Though the mail dogs are confident about their new lead dog, Balto and Jenna know that their old enemy is up to no good.

“Of course.” Balto hesitated, staring at him worriedly as he began. “Kodi, I know you think Steele wants to help you, but he’s a monster. You can’t let him lead you in the race tomorrow.”

The happiness in the young husky’s eyes quickly faded into frustration. “You seriously only came by to say bad things about Steele?” He exclaimed angrily. “He’s helping us!”

“I know you think that, Kodi, but you don’t know how Steele really is!” Balto argued, fear for his son making his tone sharper than he intended.

Kodi’s ears flattened, his eyes narrowed in anger. “Steele is one of the best sled dogs in Nome!” He yelled, his voice rich with defense. “You only hate him because he can do something that you can’t!”

Guilt flooded over Balto, and he took a step toward him. “You know that’s not true! Steele could never beat the plane, even if he wanted to. Listen to me!” He pleaded desperately. “As your father, I’m-”

“I wish Steele were my father instead!” Kodi barked sharply, and the words pierced Balto’s heart like grizzly claws. “He believes in me!” With that, he whipped around and raced down the street.

“Kodi!” Jenna stepped forward and anxiously called after him. “Kodiak!”

He ignored her as Steele appeared from around the street corner. Kodi stopped when he reached him and cast and angry look over his shoulder at his parents. Steele gave him a comforting nudge, and Kodi smiled.

Balto was left stunned and heartbroken as he watched the two of them walk away side by side. Steele has done it… He’s turned Kodi against me. He slowly hung his head, Kodi’s words echoing in his mind and breaking his heart over and over. He turned and slowly walked away, ignoring Jenna as she sadly said his name. My son hates me because I couldn’t be the hero he needed. But Steele could.
