Description The name "Diwali" or "Divali" is a contraction of "Deepavali", which translates into "row of lamps". Diwali involves the lighting of small clay lamps filled with oil to signify the triumph of good over evil. These lamps are kept on during the night and one's house is cleaned, both done in order to make the goddess Lakshmi feel welcome. Firecrackers are burst because it is believed that it drives away evil spirits.

The festival starts with Dhanteras on which most Indian business communities begin their financial year. The second day of the festival is called the Naraka Chaturdasi. Amavasya, the third day of Diwali, marks the worship of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. The fourth day of Diwali is known as Kartika Shudda Padyami. The fifth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also called Bhai Dooj), and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

Hey you're from Malaysia. How do they celebrate Diwali there?

One thing for sure, it's nothing compared to India's diwali! Well, in Malaysia there's more South Indians than North Indians here.. They wake up early in the morning, have oil baths and go to temples.. At night, they have open houses ( A Malaysian tradition, kinda like where they hold feasts and everyone is welcomed).. they decorate their house doorsteps with rangoli and (if they're lucky) play with firecrackers. In Malaysia, firecrackers are banned .. It's not fair!

I'm a gujrati (one of the very few here) Dhanteras is very important for my family as we are in the business occupation. The second day, we have the diwali celebration and have 'chopda pujan' meaning puja for account books and is worshipped before the idols of Ganesh and Maa Lakshmi. And the last day we celebrate the new year by wishing each other Saal Mubarak .
So, Saal Mubarak to you, Renu Sharma!
