100% Sparity72% Capperity
It was a good match, but Sparity won in the end.
I didn't think Capperity would get as many votes as it did. Sparity gained a good momentum in the beginning, but slowed down towards the end and got stuck at 98 votes for 3 whole months, as Capperity was slowly shortening the distance between them. But then the 2 last votes got in and Sparity hit the 100 mark first.
I did have a thing for Sparity in the earlier seasons of Mlp:fim, but the way, it's creator, the show has handled these characters and their interaction with each other has kinda left me feeling indifferent, now.
Back then, I did find Spikes crush on Rarity adorable and I would have'd love seeing them as an item later on, once Spike becomes an adult. But the show has repeatedly displayed Rarity's disinterest in spike as a romantic interest. Not to mention, once the ''Equestria Girls'' movie came out and Spike was portrayed as a dog, kinda nailed it in the coffin for me. But I guess it's rather pointless, to apply real world logic to a neon color'd pony cartoon aimed for prepubescent girls, so I digress.
But shipping is suppose to be a fun hobby, fun to imagine what could be or what could have been. So ship the ships you want and let no one tell you otherwise!

If you notice in seasons 7&8 Spike & Rarity are still hang out and seem to be getting closer in n average 'relationship'- He has tried to shield Rarity from harm and comfort her in multiple episodes 'Scare Master" "Dog & Pony Show' etc, now it's, Mauds remarks on "ordinary gems'(comforting) and before Pinkies "sun bomb" explosion (shielding) in Horse Play and with Molt Down with her booping Spike on the nose "would you mind removing your outfit" her getting Spike scale cream and his adoration continuing long after "Inspiration Manifestation" "Green isn't Her Color" yeah, Don't be surprised if these two characters get Married in Season 9 ( you can blame Larson here 'troll or hint'?)

I mean, the small interaction between Spike and Rarity are cute, I give you that. But I still feel, like Rarity is treating Spike more as a lovable pet, than an actual equal and that hasn't really change throughout the series. But that's just my opinion.
I don't think, we''ll see any ship canon among the mane 6, that be a dangerous move from the creator. I think they we'll more likely see an open end, and up to ''interpretation'', just to avoid backlash from the fandom.
I do enjoy Larsons trolling very much though.

Spike endorses Fluttercord , got Big Mac & Sugar Belle, Lyra & Bon Bon. I think if they keep the arcs going. You'll see Spike & Rarity going somewhere on a slow boat to Neighpon. Makes it interesting.

Last few episodes Spike is comforting Rarity When Maud said her gem were ordinary Spike comforted her, in Horse play just before Pinkie's sun exploded he was there again , before she blew out the smoking clothes rack she glanced to see Spike looking down from the spot light, In Molt Down she booped him on the snoot then asked him to remove his outfit, o,O What? She also picked up scale cream for her Precious Pants... Some thing's brewing here, It would be epic if Rarity went jealous for her Dragon. (They make a great paring) Larsons trolling ;D

That ship is still creepy for me. Smolder is considered a child and she is still some years older than Spike. It doesn't make sense to ship other ships than SpikexSmolder and RarityxCapper. Age difference is romantic when both characters are mature and independant. Rarity showing affections to Spike would look like grooming a kid and ToonKritic got a flak for that so we should also apply that moral outburst toward Sparity.

Had to google who Smolder and ToonKritic was. Forgot who Smolder were, had no idea who Tooncritic was? But after watching some youtube videos about him, maybe it was for the best. I'm not to into the mlp community fandom, so I'm not too aware when drama happens.
But to get at your point at hand, I understand your argument. But don't fully agree.
You have a full right to dislike Sparity, you have a full right to hate any ship you want, really and I do understand why you personally would be, put off by it.
Though, me personally, I've never had a much of a problem with it, because I've never viewed Spike as a child, more a teenager. Though this may seem like a poor defense, since it's still quit and an age difference between a young teenager and an adult.
I also never imagine their relationship to be engaging in any activity that is over (18+), I've always seen their relationship as that of an innocent one. For me, Sparity was always about a puppy love on Spike side, that instead of disappearing once he becomes an adult, actually stays intact and grows stronger.
I also never saw Rarity, actively chase Spike as an romantic interest, as he is now. But once he becomes a full fledged dragon, is when Rarity actually starts to notice him, there never was any grooming involved, goodness no, that disgusting. But these are just my headcanons.
The thing that kinda put me off Sparity, ironically, is the way Rarity continually interacts with Spike. She doesn't really view him as an equal, she treats him more like a pet, which is very comedic consider his dog persona in the Equestria Girl universe.
But these are just my opinions.

McCarthy turned him into a dog, because she didn't wanted Spike to be a little boy who is a servant to Twilight and whose crush on Rarity would probably more creepier in that setting. It's the same way why Discord doesn't exist there. It's cute that he crush on her in FiM because she is old enouch to be a teacher herself. But when she's a teenager and he is a grown up middle aged man, you turn this into something of a taboo.
