Description This was the first in my sushi series. It's 9" by 12", watercolour. I had it posted in the fall, so many of you have probably seen it before. Most of my work lately has been animals, so I apologize for posting older stuff until I get a couple of things I'm working on finished.

Thank you very much! Well, for the little round things that look like buds or flowers, I treated each one like a seperate little wash. Just a little circle of water to dampen the area, and then a quick line of burnt umber around the outside of the circle. The damp paper made the burnt umber run just a bit to make them look "fluffy". The blue is just a plain old wet wash.

Cool, it looks beautiful! And even a plain old wet wash is hard for me to do, my strokes keep showing through, so good job!

That's frustrating, for sure - If I notice that I'm getting brush strokes, I usually go back over it with a little more water to help soften it a bit.

Thank you so much! Sushi has been good to me, so I always try to have one hanging in the gallery at any given time.

Thanks! I'm pretty big on sushi, too. I prefer California rolls, but I'll eat anything once.

Thanks! I think this is the one with the most favourites. I had a lot of fun with it; I just woke up one day and said, "I think I'll paint some sushi..."

Must try that sometimes, too. I love how Japanese meals are arranged. Another creative hobby of mine is cooking and I came to arrange food from time to time as well, when we have guests, but I never painted it so far.

We have quite a few Japanese people in my family (my blonde-haired blue-eyed cousins tend to marry Japanese men), so I have a ready resource for things like this. I guess it's a little odd to say, but Japanese food is so pretty!

Oh, really
I'm married with a Japanese guy, too (I'm actually from Germany),
Two days ago we've had our 8th wedding anniversary and I can say, that those were 8 WONDERFUL years without any fight or bad words between us. We are still as much in love as on our first day together.

Oh and yes, Japanese food... I really enjoy cooking that way and preparing some artistic lunch box for my kids every morning

Interesting coincidence - my first wife was born in Bremerhaven and my second (and current) wife was born in Hamburg. It sounds as though you have a very happy marriage! ^_^

Oh, this is an coincidence indeed
I'm from a small village near Frankfurt am Main, my hubby is from Nagoya, but lived 8 years in Germany, where we met. Now we live in Hakodate (Hokkaido) and feel like we found "home" and peace for us and the kids.
Have you ever been to Germany? Or to Japan?

I'm afraid I've never been to either, although I was an alternate for a foreign exchange programme when I took German in high school. I was familiar enough with the culture, but my language skills were pretty pathetic.

Just looked at your Sushi plate again... I went to a restaurant last weekend and now I want to paint the Kegani (a crab) they served there

I've been thinking I need to do a sumi-e crab. For some reason, the genre seems to lend itself well to sea creatures.

theancientofdays In reply to density-tmr [2007-03-18 08:33:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks very much! I think the texture of the paper (as in pastel) really helps this one - the rice looks "ricier" somehow. I don't know how I managed to get those chopsticks like that - I drink far too much coffee to have a hand that steady.
