Angola was a respect marine biologist and conservationist, particularly for her work in preserving coral reefs and opposition to shark fishing operations. While on an expedition through the North Atlantic, she partook in a deep sea diving operation, where she came upon a sunken ship from many hundreds of years ago. Inside the ship, she came across a headpiece of some sort that looked very valuable, as well as a solid gold amulet. Unbeknownst to her, the amulet was the Amulet of Midas, an ancient artefact that compelled intense greed in the one that possessed it. This compulsion led her to wearing the headpiece.
The headpiece was the Wreath of Wrath, an artefact that was infused with the collective desire for revenge of a civilisation of selkies against the Atlanteans that wiped them out. Any who wore the wreath would become consumed by that same desire, and be granted the power to achieve it. Angola was transformed into a mermaid herself, with a hypnotic bauble she could use in her quest to avenge the fallen selkies against the descendants of those that slew them so many centuries ago. She is given the name Mesmermaid by the media.

Powers: Angola has a hypnotic bauble attached to her head that seems to be connected to her headpiece. It remains unclear if the bauble is technological, or a natural part of her body. The victim must maintain eye contact with the bauble to maintain its effect. Reflection of its light can be used to lightly weaken the target's resistance prior to full exposure. Naturally, it is more effective in the dark. Post-hypnotic suggestions are possible with this power, but they wear off after a few days.
Personality:
When not under the direct influence of the wreath, Angola holds strong feelings regarding environmental destruction, but mostly only in excess. She understands the necessity of such acts in moderation, but is strongly against such acts being done callously or to an unnecessary extent.
When under its influence, she is much more vicious and revels in using her abilities to turn more and more people against Atlantis. While not above using people to fight against Atlantis and its allies, she finds immense conflict in utilising tactics that are detrimental to sea life and the environment.
Her favoured minion is Tigris due to her own strong feelings surrounding the mistreatment of animals, which makes her one of the few people Mesmermaid actually enjoys spending time around.
