Maybe it was the tales spun by wide-eyed navy boys that wove her into a woman with the beauty of Aphrodite and the sword of Athena, yet she was much like her name, cut short and made masculine. She was English, a rough and lower class accent clung to her words, and she was much smaller than what he had envisioned. She wore a pompous hat that made him want to laugh at the sight of the plume, yet its extravagance fit her. The hair that he could see from underneath the brim of her hat was dirty and shorn; the original blond had darkened into a dingy brown. But her eyes were bright with blue intelligence; she wasn’t as low as her speech fooled one into thinking. And she knew it.
