Old picture or not, I'd like to say that this picture is very nice, despite what some peoples opinions are on the ears.

Here's some reasons to have them at -least- this long:

Trolls are night elves ancestors, and you can spot very clear things that they have in common still after thousands of years in evolution. The ears are one of these things.

As much as the ears are long, they are sensitive in many aspects. In both hearing and sense, like a mix of the lynx or bat (who too have large ears in comparison to their bodies IRL and in WoW) and a moth, who have long antennas to sense things around them.

There are multiple beings in the world today who have extremely long parts in comparison to their bodies for good reason Like a sawfish, moth or even the whiskers of a cat that can be -very- long.

In that sense, it's only logical to see pictures like these.

Great work! ^-^

Thank you so much

It's a bit of a pet peevee of mine when people critique designs of characters rather than the techniques used or the elements of a picture (if they now feel the need to critique anything, at least I can control that). Especially when it's correct according to canon, I'm just drawing what I'm paid to after all But I agree with you, there is logic behind the long ears

That is some well-carved wood on her... eh, rear armor. XP

And I am pretty sure that the most common medical problem of elves is "ear fracture". Because those ear tips are looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong.

But all jokes aside, a really cool piece. Nice to see some green used in clothing for once. A bold choice. I might have selected another background for a bit more contrast though, since right now they sorta blend in... ^^"

A really nice piece though, all in all. The pose looks very natural and the bodies well proportioned (beyond the ears).

The-Moonbound In reply to whitescar [2016-03-01 16:35:38 +0000 UTC]

Night elves have really long ears. I'm looking at one right now in game, and they are perfectly proportional. Maybe you should look into that before you start saying it's wrong

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

whitescar In reply to The-Moonbound [2016-03-01 16:38:13 +0000 UTC]

I never said they were wrong. XP

I just commented that they are epicly long.
Be a conscious design decision as it may, it still looks... odd. Even compared to the normal aesthetic of WoW.

Those things look like you'd be smacking them into all sorts of things walking through woods, turning around at home, even turning around in bed at night would all be potential cases of getting your ears caught up in a rather uncomfortable twist. ^^"
Of course nothing wrong with portraying things as they are intended, mind you. But that does not make the epicly long ears less silly and impractical, IMO. ^^"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Moonbound In reply to whitescar [2016-03-01 16:45:12 +0000 UTC]

You may think that they are odd, but they are as they should be canon-wise. Pointing out how something doesn't appeal to you personally is honestly really pointless in this situation and only comes across as nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking. The commissioner is happy with the picture and so am I.

whitescar In reply to The-Moonbound [2016-03-01 16:58:22 +0000 UTC]

Umh... Sorry?

I don't get the apparent hostility here. Surely one can be of any opinion they wish of a piece of art and I did offer some actual criticism as well. So I don't know why you got so caught up on the ears.
If the commissioner is happy with the end result, then that is great and I'm happy that they got what they wanted.

But that does not change the fact that personally those ears still look silly.

That is of course not your fault at all. Mostly Blizzard's, since they made the design decision. If one considers it to be "fault" in the first place, that is.
Just stating an opinion regarding an aesthetic design choice.
I know WoW elves have very long ears, but as canon as that may be, it looks very impractical and when "overdone" as a racial trait for Night Elves in particular, what is a distinctive feature of the WoW design aesthetic becomes, well, too much for me.

How a personal opinion regarding the aesthetic design of a company of which you are not a part of is "nitpicking" I don't really understand, but rest assured I did not mean anything bad by it. Just stating my opinion.

The-Moonbound In reply to whitescar [2016-03-01 17:28:04 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps you are not aware, but it's considered rude to just state that something isn't your personal preference - it's not incorrect by canon, it's not badly portrayed - but you don't like it. That is not constructive criticism and can be kept to yourself, such opinions doesn't interest me at all unless the person is buying art from me. It's sort of an unspoken rule. I don't come across art and say "I love the face, but the haircut is unflattering!" That would not help the artist and is directly insulting the owner of the character.

This is not the first time you make similar comments on my art or the art of others, and it appears obvious to everyone but you that it's not appreciated.

TheRealShanBear In reply to The-Moonbound [2016-03-01 16:50:41 +0000 UTC]

I'm pretty sure since Night Elves evolved over thousands of years to HAVE large ears that they are spatially aware of them, and therefore don't whack them on things. Most art and models actually show them much larger than you have portrayed them here, Moon, but I really love your 'dainty' take on them. Sometimes drawn 'proper' to the in-game models, the ears can look comical.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

The-Moonbound In reply to TheRealShanBear [2016-03-01 17:34:06 +0000 UTC]

Certainly, lol! Especially considering night elves usually have a couple of thousand years on them. By that logic, how do cats keep their tail from getting in the way all the time? o.o I mean, it's so long...

Thank you, I'm glad you like them I agree, most art of them depict the ears even longer, and they extend far backwards on the in game models XD

whitescar In reply to TheRealShanBear [2016-03-01 17:11:20 +0000 UTC]

Humans have evolved through thousands of years to have the sort of hands and feet that we are equipped with and yet we still stub our tiny toes on furniture corners and our elbows into pointy surfaces or flail our hands into glassware...
Biological evolution is soooo much slower than cultural evolution that what works in a certain predator-prey setting may often be utterly useless in a modern society setting.

But bringing logic into this is utterly pointless. It is a fantasy setting meant for fun.

TheRealShanBear In reply to whitescar [2016-03-01 17:23:35 +0000 UTC]

"It is a fantasy setting meant for fun."

Exactly. If your problem is with Blizzard's fantasy ears, then why criticize an artist for correctly rendering something you think is odd? No-one asked for your opinion. You're being an asshole just for the sake of it.

'Opinions are like dicks. Some people like them, but that doesn't mean you can shove it down anyone's throat who didn't ask for it.'

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

whitescar In reply to TheRealShanBear [2016-03-01 17:27:35 +0000 UTC]

What?!

When did I say that this was the artist's fault? Can a guy not say that he does not like an aesthetic choice without everyone assuming he's wanting to nail someone to across for it?
Jeeze, lighten up, people!

I only said that the aesthetic choice in this picture doesn't work for me, BUT despite that I still find it very appealing because of the quality of drawing. If that's not actually high praise (liking something due to artistic merit despite not liking the design) then I don't know what is...

You blow that comment WAY out of all proportion here...

It me it sounds like you are being negative for the sake of being negative.
It's one thing to bring up in a discussion that you don't like Blizzard's designs. But to go and bring that up on a piece of someone's hard work is kinda rude. Not to mention it's a slap in the face to the person who payed hard earned money for the commission.
You are entitled to have your opinions but you are not free from the backlash you get for expressing them.
