This March, however, the closely related Northern White Rhino became "functionally extinct".
Sudan, the last remaining Northern White Rhino male died March 19th of ald age and complications of a foot infection, leaving behind two females who are too old to breed at the Ol Pejate Conservancy in Kenya. Poaching for the Middle-Eastern and Asian markets, exacerbated by constant bush wars have exterminated what once was the largest population of rhinos on Earth. For everyone who immediately wants to blame some guy from Texas, this was not about trophy hunting, it was horn for guns, without any control, made possible by multiple levels of official corruption, and while the world looked on and did not pay attention. Technophiles clamour that science will save the species as the last of Sudan's aged and poor-quality semen was collected immediately following his death, as was the few remaining eggs from the females. IV techniques have proven useless on the species so far though. Instead, one of the last survivors of a world from before the ice age has died and nary a tweet nor a twitter was sounded in response.

Vietnam has recently surpassed China in illegal wildlife imports, especially as Rhino horn has been touted as both a restorative for overindulgence in alcohol and as a cure for breast cancer. The trade in illegal wildlife from Vietnam is now an exchange in human trafficking of adolescent girls for rhino horn.
