colored version of [link] which made through semifinal of dA's official Photojournalism contest 2009: LIFEThis place quite well illustrating the discrepancy in life between the poor and the rich people in Jakarta, Indonesia.
As you can see the poor live in very small-simple-rotten houses above the river. Made of plank as their wall, bamboo as their foundation, and zinc on their roof that they took from the trashes. Imagine the way they drinking, bathing, urinating, and washing with the same water from the dirty river (with all the rubbish as you can see). They sleep in the cold and work in the heat every single day.
In the meanwhile, the rich people live in the magnificent apartments just behind it. They have air conditioners, water heater, fresh water to drink, and so much more excessive.

i live in beijing, china and sights like this are far from uncommon
i live in the far more well-off section and it pains me to see the sufferings that others must face
i woulnt say that i am spoiled by lack of want but my lifestyle is similar to many in developed countries
living next to poverty awakens me everyday and allows me to be counscious of this world
i love this picture because it captures all of this disparity...i especially find the symbolism of the light colored towers rising out like an oasis from the poverty stricken area that is overwhelming...

The east can be wonderful, but things could also have a downside, like the way you are presenting here.
To me this is a storytelling photography, even without the text below the photo, it's just what I'm thinking having seen your photo.

A really touching photo. Although it makes me feel kind of bad about it. I'm rather interested in (and terrified by) the social structure's faults. It seems like we're heading towards a big crisis that won't be easy to handle. (Well in my country, at least, it seems that the middle class is slowly disappearing.)
I'd like to make a short movie too, though I focus on other matters mainly.

first of all, thank you for the compliment.. and yes I agree, it's really sad to see the social structure nowadays. I do have a friend in Hungary, but he never tell me that these things happen to right there. So I guess it has been a global issues. It has to be stopped, and our job as artist is encourage the movement through our artworks. I'll say go make the movie, because it does matter. I'll do the same definitely, if I have the resources and capability.

Your pictures actually tells a lot even though it is only one shot. I admire photographers such as you because you can convey the meaning of society through the lens.
In my opinion, the photo suggests an irony of a society where only the rich becomes richer and the poor becomes poorer. Most resources are controlled by the rich and nothing are left for the poor.

Of course, what captured emediately my eyes, is the contrast between the poor - rich way of living...
It belongs also to my favorite kind of photography. To this one that reflects not only the real truth for the world that we re living but also includes a real water reflection which gives an artistic hue to this sad but true reality!!!!!
