Description Here for your viewing pleasure, is My Little Pony custom Tutorial 2: Sulptin' With Apoxie. This is part of my work in progress pictures from making my Baby Moogle custom:

Note: This tutorial is just how I go about doing things, and many artists find different ways of making customs.

************
1. Ah, so your pony is prepped and ready for some sweet sculpting action. Well, what I always do is make sure I have all my supplies on hand. On my lovely craft table I have my prepped pony, some water, hand lotion, paper towels, various tools (mostly dentist tools), and Aves Apoxie Sculpt. You of course can use all kinds of fun things to sculpt with, but these are my basics.

A note about Apoxie: 9/10 when you see something sculpted by me, I use this stuff. Why? Mostly because its nice to work with, air dries so I don't risk melting a pony in the oven, it doesn't shrink or warp like some clays so, and it dries very sturdy. Other popular options for sculpting on a pony are Sculpey, Fimo, Lumiere Clay, and other craft clays. But for this tutorial, I'm working with Apoxie. :3

2. Mixing the Apoxie! Its a two part solution- and once its well mixed you have about 3 hours to work with it until it dries. This of course varies on location, time of the year, etc, but as a general rule of thumb its about 3 hours. So first I start by rolling little balls of each part to equal size.

3. Then I roll the balls of clay into "snakes"...

4. Then I make a "caterpillar" by twisting the snakes together.

5. And then SMASH THE CATERPILLAR!! Yeaaaaaah! I usually work the clay for a few minutes. You want to make sure to blend them evenly, if you don't the clay won't dry correctly. But if you knead the clay around for a few minutes, I find I rarely ever have issues.

6. While letting the clay start to cure, I decide I'm going to give the clay a bit of an armature. Two popular things to use is wire mesh and wire. In this tutorial I'm only using the wire.

7. That doesn't look comfortable! I'm making a hole for the wire with a push pin.

8. Then I inserted the wire with pliers.

9. I also added a glob of apoxie to the inside of his head where the wire came in, to keep it from falling out later. Do be careful, you don't want to cover up the hair plug holes if you plan on rehairing the pony!

10. Using the same method, I also gave him guide wires for his wings.

11. Next I'm working on giving him some bigger hooves. On his right side you can see the clay before it is blended in. I use the water to blend it in at this point.

12. Adding more details- this time his pom pom and nose

13. And adding his fuzzy jowls.

14. Before drying, make sure to smooth out the clay. Here I am smoothing some out with a tool, but I also use my hands with hand lotion. This saves on sanding later.

15. Here he is with his wings! He's almost ready to dry!

16. And while he is drying, since he is going in my car, I stuffed him with dryer sheets for that April Fresh smell.

Can you you find Apoxie Sculpt in craft stores (such as Michaels or Hobby Lobby) or can you only buy it online?
Curious because I've never heard of it before, and I've been looking for decent air-dry clay for a LONG time cx

And also, can these steps also apply to the newer model toys as well?

Thank you for any answers you can give me c:

I haven't found Apoxie Sculpt in stores yet, so I just buy mine online. The company is really nice tho!

And I've used it so far for MLP all gens, Breyers, Action figures, as well as sculpting things from scratch! I love it!

Only downside is it is a bit pricy but it does last a long while depending on how much you use. I've had a big bunch of it for years now.

what brand of apoxie do you use?

Just wondering, I was stupid and already colored my pony but forgot to put on the clay parts. Just in general, when using clay, do you put glue down then sculpt over the glue? I'm going to have a wire but I'm afraid that won't be enough to keep it secure.

Is it a strong compound?
I wanna use it for a custom that will go on a keychain.

sorry for the late reply. The clay is two parts, the water is just used a bit to help make the clay soft

Does the Apoxie stick well to the pony? I'm hoping to start making customs (which I don't think would have even crossed my mind if I hadn't started watching your channel), and a friend of mine wants a Poison Ivy one. I was hoping to put the costume directly onto the pony somehow, and I want to sculpt it, not sew it.

Yes, BUT I totally recommend not using hand lotion till after its well stuck on the pony. Apoxie= BEST EVAR!!

If you ever need any help let me know!

Thank you! I definitely need to wait until I have a steady paycheck to get all the supplies I need, but I just bid on my first lot of ponies yesterday. I'm super excited!

Lol, awesome, because if all the girls I'm moving in with are horrible, I'm going to need a new hobby. XD

Eep. Yeah I know how you feel- that was at least one of my college roomates at every place I lived in during school. Hobbies are the best! (and if they're being super mean, you can always creep them out with headless ponies!)

liealatoto In reply to thatg33kgirl [2011-07-14 19:04:10 +0000 UTC]

XD That's actually the best piece of advice I've gotten over the whole fiasco! I'll have to keep that one in mind...

I was going to live with some friends, but they all decided to leave the on-campus apartments, and I can't afford something off-campus.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thatg33kgirl In reply to liealatoto [2011-07-14 20:22:44 +0000 UTC]

Ah, yeah that was kinda the same thing for me too. One of my friends was in the dorm most of college (and the dorms were small), so I did on campus housing and was just kinda in houses with other people from my major. I had a few nice roomies... but a lot of not so great girls.

I also recommend keeping some eye-less beddy-eye baby ponies around, they're great for scaring the common-folk! (heres a pic of one with eyes, eww [link] )

liealatoto In reply to thatg33kgirl [2011-07-14 20:48:57 +0000 UTC]

XD I almost bid on one of those! The auction's over, though....Damn.

Yeah, the apartment I'm going to be in is nice enough...Nicer than some of the off-campus options, for sure. I'll be living with three other girls, and I'll have to share a room with one of them. Hopefully, it all works out.

thatg33kgirl In reply to liealatoto [2011-07-14 23:09:31 +0000 UTC]

lol its ok, they're usually pretty easy to find, cause they're so creepy.

Sounds good, hopefully you at least know the one you have to share a room with!

Nope, all strangers! XD; Oh, well. I tend to adapt pretty well. Hopefully I'll be able to be friends with them all.

thatg33kgirl In reply to liealatoto [2011-07-15 02:20:54 +0000 UTC]

Oh noes! well, thats how mine were too, and I'm still cool with one of them! lol. The rest, not so much. Are they in the same program as you or is it completely random?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

liealatoto In reply to thatg33kgirl [2011-07-15 02:29:36 +0000 UTC]

It's pretty random. All I know is that they won't be smokers and they're in the 21-24 age group. We have to fill out this little "roommate profile" thingy, and the rooming staff takes it from there.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thatg33kgirl In reply to liealatoto [2011-07-15 20:20:38 +0000 UTC]

well, thats good! Thats how my first one was. Of course my bestie had the same thing and she's still really good friends with some of her roomates. I think its ok just as long as you don't get the kind like my one roomate, who was quoted as saying "OH MY GAWD I WAS SO DRUNK I PASSED OUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!"

liealatoto In reply to thatg33kgirl [2011-07-15 22:54:54 +0000 UTC]

XD My first roommate (who was underage at the time) fell full-force against the door one morning. I didn't know what it was, so I just stayed in bed. Turns out, she had passed out there.

And again, if not, headless ponies. Ohhh yah!

Arakis-angel [2011-07-12 23:35:47 +0000 UTC]

Also, (sorry I forgot to add) when I work with Apoxie it tends to sag a bit. I'm assuming the wire / mesh keeps that from happening? How much of an armature do you put under something heavy like the wings?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thatg33kgirl In reply to Arakis-angel [2011-07-13 00:23:41 +0000 UTC]

yes, if you put the armature it helps that, plus waiting a bit for it to harden.

[link] under pic 4 is her wire armature. Hope that helps!

Arakis-angel In reply to thatg33kgirl [2011-07-13 01:52:33 +0000 UTC]

Awesome, thanks! I'll try that. And letting it harden a bit. Haha... I made a pair of kitty ears and they sagged. oops.

thatg33kgirl In reply to Arakis-angel [2011-07-13 17:28:44 +0000 UTC]

lol well, if you look closely at my Azumaril pony (one of my first time using apoxie) her ears were pretty droopy at first. Sanding helps everything too!

Do you wear gloves when you mix the apoxie? Mine says to wear gloves but it's impossible to work with them sticking to everything.
