Description This fella is why I gave up on Inktober.

ColbyJack is a passage (immature) male Merlin (Falco columbarius columbarius), which are called Jacks in falconry.  Jack is to Merlin as Tiercel is to Falcon.  Unfortunately, tiercel is used incorrectly by so many people.  A Tiercel is specifically the male Peregrine... not a word to be used interchangeably for 'male' to try to sound "smarter."

The dark spot on his gape was from the hood that was used when he was first brought home.  He has a better fitting one now that doesn't irritate his gape.

I know some falconers don't like it when people call their birds "cute", but I have to say that ColbyJack is absolutely adorable!

OH HE IS.   I call him adorable and a charmer so regularly... love this guy. He has such character that the camera just doesn't get.  I got a few more photos today, too, with better light and no fence in the background.

Probably will be early next week. My weekend is pretty loaded with errands, falconry, archery, puppy training, and a little raiding.

it's just this time of year!  Everything started picking up all at once.  Over the summer there was so much of the 'same stuff different day' going on that I often didn't know what day of the week I was on!

He reminds me a bit of my kestrel, but thats just from size and expression. Behaviourally he's more like the gyr hybrids I've worked with, which seems consistent with what I have been told (that merlins are like tiny gyrs).

I have heard someone say the same thing. Will you be hunting with him?

Yes. No point in having a bird for falconry if they aren't being hunted.. otherwise it's just keeping.
I plan to fly starlings with him, possibly sparrows I just have to check back with folks and make sure they are still ok with me flying their farms. Last time I talked to some of them was when I still had my kestrel.

I wasn't sure if you had him as a falconry bird or not. I know several people who do education so I never know for sure until I ask.

Can't use non-captive bred birds to make money.

It's part of why I wanted to get an Aplomado, so at the very least I could be reimbursed for gas if I go to an event. Right now I can go somewhere and talk about falconry specifically, but can't be paid.

I wasn't sure if you trapped the bird or if it was captive bred. Sorry. I know the laws.

I figured you did.
All captive bred birds must have a seamless numbered band on one of their legs.

I wasn't looking for it when I saw the photo, so I figured I would just ask you.
