Because his father's name is Thranduil, and by Elven customs he is to be named, Sindarin, Legolas Thranduil-ion for male. As far as I know.

Well, Greenleaf is only a translation of the name Legolas - as far as I remember, from Quenya - Laiqua (green) lasse (leaf) and Greenleaf always worked a bit humanish for me x)

Absolutely!! I can't wait for The Hobbit... And I simply had to design their Mirkwood outfits... ^^ I rather imagine them dark blue, then green, maybe because the wood suffered so much, their clothes have the colour of the night.

That's one good theory yes, the costumes are going to be very dark earty colours for the film. I know this because I've watched the video blogs PJ is posting on his FaceBook page every so often, and on one of them it shows the outfit sketches of Legolas and Thranduil behind the costumer designer's shoulder.
